Anybody loading Siamese Mauser 8mm?

Post by bladeracer » 25 Jul 2018, 5:13 pm

I haven't even been able to confirm if they're 8x50mm or 8x52mm so far.
Are they available in both cartridges?
Anybody got cartridge dimensions?
I want to make a neck die for it.

apparently they are available in both, started in 8x50 but some upgraded to 8x52
here is a bit of info I found on the net that may help you

Siamese 8x50Rmm Type 45
Original Cartridge:
Case Length ... 1.983 / 50.3682 mm

Neck Diameter: .348
Bullet Diameter: .321 ... 237 gr. round nose, lead cored, cupro-nickel clad, FMJ
FPS: 2050 MPS: 625

I used the Woodleigh .323 220gr. Round Nose Soft Nose SD: .301 BC: .355 bullet as this was the closest to the original specs above and the results:
IMR 4895 ... 40.8grs. = 2050 fps

Case: Remington R-P / Reformed by Buffalo Arms
Primer: Winchester Large Rifle
Case Length: 1.980
Overall Length is 2.970
* These were chonographed in 48 degree weather and therefore the possibility of the cartridges bieng cold could change the velocity in warmer weather

Overall Length: 2.941 / 74.70 mm

Bullet Diameter: .321 ... 181gr. spitzer boat-tail bullet, lead cored, a gilding-metal or copper-washed steel FMJ jacket
FPS: 2250 / MPS: 685

I used the Nosler .323 180 gr. Ballistic Tip SD: .246 BC: .357 bullet as this was the closest to the original specs above and the results:
IMR 3031 ... 38.5grs. = 2250 fps
IMR 4064 ... 40.5grs. = 2250 fps
IMR 4320 ... 42.5 to 42.7grs. = 2250 fps

Wow, that's awesome Marksman!
I did spend some time looking online, managed to find some photos of the cartridges but couldn't find much about the case dimensions.
I bought two rifles off a guy that has one and I'd like to try to make him some ammo so he can actually shoot it.

G'day bladeracer,
Very very few of the Type 45 rifles escaped rechambering, and your friends is most likely going to be chambered for the Type 66. If you don't know for sure by markings or chamber cast the Type 45 cartridge will fire fine in a Type 66 rifle. I only load 8x52R, cases can be made from 45-70 (a lot of Siamese Mausers were converted to 45-70 in the US due to ammo shortages) or can be purchased from DocAV. I use the Speer 150g, .323 pill with 44.0g of AR2206H. Cheers.
