Pistol Dies

Post by 1Fatman » 19 Aug 2018, 11:28 am

Just a quick question;

Which is better for reloading 9mm brass, Carbide dies or Titanium Nitride dies?
I have been reloading for rifle for more years than I can remember but I am just getting into pistols.
I have all the gear (except dies) and will be starting off with a single stage or turret press.

Any advise with be appreciated. :D :D

I have carbide .45acp pistol dies; they work pretty well in my single-stage press. Not sure price difference between carbide and TiN, but I'm guessing the TiN ones would be dearer?

I bought carbide in preference to standard steel dies, as they require less lube to size brass. Not sure if TiN does away with the need for lube completely, but I havent found any reason to need anything more than my carbide dies.

Cheers,

Rod.

G'Day Fella's,

1Fatman, I have been reloading pistol ammo, for many decades now.
In that time, I have tried most dies that are available.
These days, my first choice is always Dillon carbide dies.
They are not only very well made but well designed and verstile.

Hope that helps

Yep; I run Dillon Carbide pistol dies, and they are indeed well-made, and work well.

Another thumbs-up for Dillon carbide dies from me.

Cheers,

Rod.

I load 3 pistol calibres...9mm, 45ACP and 38 Special. I use a number of Hornady LNL Progressive presses as well as the Hornady dies. Been loading with these dies for many years and load at least 400-500 a week. Never an issue, never a failure to chamber in all my pistols (many of each calibre). The Hornady dies I use are their "custom" grade die sets. I taper crimp the 9mm, 45 and 38 using a separate taper crimp die in the last station. I prefer this to using the bullet seating die to seat and crimp in one movement. The taper crimp dies are only to straighten the case belling in the 9mm and 45. With the 38 I use the die to pull the crimp slightly into the crimp groove in the projectiles I cast myself. Only using moderate to light loads in all for target shooting.
