Earthing loading presses

Has anyone earthed their presses& loaders against static electricity?i have often wondered if this neccessary& would it make powder flow any easier?your thoughts would be appreciated.

Never thought about it.

I dont charge with or have powder flowing through the press.

& im not sure how i could earth the plastic hopper on the powder thrower...but it doesnt seem to have powder statically clinging to it anyway.

Mmmm, good question. Stix is right it's really the thrower that is the higher risk. Being plastic it's difficult. And I did notice yesterday that there was a small charge building in the hopper of my Lee thrower.

Perhaps if you have some graphite rub it on the internals of the hopper and then run some though the thrower. Then earth the thrower.
In that industry most things are earthed using a copper stake into the earth, about 750mm long. Normally a few items from 1 building are earthed using the 1 stake.

Just a point, don't use your house earth stake. It's possible to get "feed back" from your household 240v power.

If it was needed one would think they'd be making them with an earth strap, lack of said strap would suggest it's not necessary. :drinks:

Is it possible to ignite powder or primers with static electricity? I have never tried but it has never been an issue for me. I might have to go out of my way to try now.

Modern powders, unlike some of the very older ones, are less likely to be ignited. BP I think more prevalent. I'm unsure if it's a real issue.

I've seen static clinging to both the inside of my Chargemaster hopper, and occasionally the inside of the funnel.

Never had it become a concern.

If static is a consideration wearing an earth strap may help every time you touch something you will earth it .
used to work in a company that was explosive in some areas due to the amount of solvents in the area we were all made to wear static chains and test for static on entry .

Yep that is another way of lowering the risk. You can buy ones designed for sensitive electrical circuit such as in the computer industry. Try jaycar. TBO I think earthing your bench is the best way to go. Then everything touching it is earthed, but must be metal topped bench.

Really...static...??!! :o

So of all the reloaders in the world, how many reloading rooms have gone up in a smoke due to static electricity...
Not to mention factories that load.

Id hazzard a fairly logical guess that if static was an issue then amunition possession & storage requirements would be different.

If you're so worried about it...dont buy gunpowder &/or reload.

Sheesh...we'd all have blistered faces & black soot marks on the ceiling above our throwers if it were anywhere near being a problem...

And if you want to wear a strap-on around the house, you dont need to use gun powder as an excuse...!!!

Perhaps more importantly how its possible for static to effect your scales. I just stumbled onto this in an old Lyman guide.

I earthed my presses. Don't know if it made any noticeable difference although definitely less of that powder climbing the powder drop in my Hornady LNL Progressives. Ran a single wire from presses to a mangled steel target frame shoved into the soil at the back of the garage where I load.

Soooo, I earthed my steel topped bench to the steel garage frame yesterday. Later to be sure will earth the shed using a copper pipe in the ground.

Done, 1/2" copper pipe rammed down about 16" into ground. Should work fine.
