Slow Progress

Post by Rod_outbak » 22 Sep 2018, 1:44 pm

Slowly making headway...

So, I now have 350 rounds loaded for the station .223.

I have ~140 rounds loaded for the Ruger Precision .308 - all of the loaded ones in the pic are 125gn SST's for the RPR.

The 2 batches of 50 each on the left are now complete and ready to load, as I finished them up yesterday arvo.

Batch at the back is the for the Rem 700 .308, and are also now complete and ready for loading.

So, the bench has a big bare patch on it at present.

There are still 140 7mm-08 cases that need sizing and trimming, which I'll work through this weekend.

I think I'm now at the point where I have ~350 cases prepped for the Ruger, about 300 cases prepped for the Rem 700, and by tomorrow night, I should have around 300 cases prepped for the 7mm-08.

Maybe pop the primers out of another couple of hundred cases for the Ruger, and get them though the tumbler to clean them, and maybe work on prepping them early next week.

Getting there, but many more days to get on top of it all...

Beats the crap out of the majority of the garbage on TV...

Cheers,

Rod.

Do you think it's worth reloading .223? I am considering it but i'm unsure of it is worth it or not.

It depends; you'll never get the most out of a firearm when using factory ammo.
If you were talking larger calibers(.243, 7mm-08, .30-30, .308, etc), I'd probably say that even 50 rounds a year probably justifies reloading.
Factory ammo has improved beyond belief in the past 30 years, but reloading allows you to size the cartridge to fit your firearms' chamber very closely, which improves accuracy and consistency.
Factory ammo is never going to be that precise a fit for any particular rifle; it is manufactured to meet the SAAMI standard for that cartridge.

If you shoot a hundred .223 rounds a year, and find factory ammo is good enough for your needs, you mightnt want to invest the time and money in reloading.

If, on the other hand, you shoot much more than that, you'll be getting into the zone where it is becoming cheaper to "roll your own".

For me, I have a lot more confidence in my own reloaded ammo, than I do with factory ammo.
There are also a lot of the projectiles that I load, that arent available off the shelf.
.223 usually has a pretty wide range of factory ammo available off the shelf, and a lot of it is pretty good.
The larger calibres are often much more limited on what factory ammo options are available, but .223 is usually quite diverse.

In the case of .223, it might come down to how much shooting you do in a year.
Be warned; embracing the dark arts of reloading often causes you to develop a serious case of OCD...

Cheers,

Rod.

???

Tom604, I currently nail 10-15 grasshoppers on my sunrise/sunset walks around the homestead surrounds each day.
Pretty sure that most people here would kill for that amount of shooting activity in their lives.
I suspect my endeavors the past 8 months have created a new breed of raptor; the Fat-Arsed Hawk.
Looks like a Kite Hawk, but has a MUCH bigger bum, and cant fly very well, due to his excessive waist-line..

Not long after posting this article(~5:30pm), I get a visit at the homestead by Mrs Porkey and a whole bunch of Minipigs.
Sadly, Mrs Porkey passed away suddenly, as did one of the bunch of Minipigs who were last sighted legging it for the creeks.
A visit from hot pork without even leaving the front door....Something we all dream of.
Yep 125Gn SST's work a treat at 50 metres, and 90 metres respectively... Minipig is missing about 40% of his body; poor little tyke.

The main reason I'm furiously reloading, is to keep my 15 per day habit supported...

And you want me to go shooting MORE??
I'm struggling to keep up with my habit as it is!

Cheers,

Rod.
