Lucky Dip prize from Hornady!

Post by Rod_outbak » 25 Sep 2018, 7:48 am

Folks,

Finishing up a box of 7mm projectiles last night; another 60 rounds loaded for the 7mm-08 Tikka T3.

Sitting in the bottom of the tray I use for projectiles, is one extra!

Pic attached shows the 55Gn .224 Zmax pills I have been loading for the .223 Remington.
Projectile on the right is the 120Gn V-Max pill I've been loading for the 7mm-08.

Projectile in the middle seems to be a .224 Vmax pill weighing in around 30 grains!

I have never purchased a projectile lighter than 50 grains for the .224, so I can only assume it's a gift from Hornady!

What kind thoughtful people they are!

Buuuuttttt....They dont seem to make a 30Gn pill in .224! Calipers show it having the same diameter as the 55Gn pill beside it, but the Hornady site doesnt have a 30Gn pill listed at all. Smallest for .224 is 35gn, and I've weighed this thing 3 times now, after weighing other known projectiles to check the scales.

So, a present, AND a mystery!

I am SO lucky!

Cheers,

Rod.

That's a 35gr Vmax. Not sure why it doesn't weight 35gr. Maybe it is reject?

I dunno. It seems to have a different shape to the ogive(??), and it's exactly the same caliber as the .224 pill beside it.
It doesnt look like a half-formed bullet; it looks finished as if it is complete.

The shape reminds me of the FTX pills for the .30-30, but shrunk to .224.
They dont make either a rifle or handgun projectile in that caliber in that weight.

Weird.

Found the projectile in question:

22 WMR 30 gr V-MAX® Varmint Express® Rimfire
Item #83202 | 50/Box

Just not sure why they are handing them out free with boxes of 7mm projectiles...

Cheers,

Rod.

At that weight it may be a .204 smack projectile.

The fact that it measures exactly the same diameter as the .224 55gn projectiles, and is the exact same weight as one of the .22 WMR projectiles, I'd be placing my money on it being a 30-grain .22 WMR pill that has jumped ship into the wrong box.

How that is possible is rather intriguing to me; I would have thought Hornady QC should be able to pick such events up.

Cheers,

Rod.
