Bulk 30 Cal (308) projectiles

Post by Milesy » 26 Oct 2018, 8:13 pm

Good Evening All
Question about 308 bullets
I use The Sierra Super Roo 55g in my 223 reloads which is great and at about 18c a pop great value.
I have just bought a 308win and will look to reload to keep costs down.
Does anyone know of 30cal equivalent ie. Cheap!
Obviously won’t be 18c but comparable for larger cal.

Mate the Speer 130gn HP are about $36/100.
Cheap for a .30 Cal pill.
Failing that I think you can still get 178 ELD X for somewhere around $50/100.
I got some of those not long ago to try.

Milesy,

You dont mention intended game and/or approx distance, but I'm assuming light-medium game like roos and/or pigs?

Speer TNT 125Gn projectiles in bulk packs of 500, at 30CAL 125GR HP TNT $149 /PER 500.
That comes in around 30 cents a shot, and I dont think you'll go much cheaper than that.
[And they are supposed to hit HARD - I use Hornady 125Gn SST's, and out to ~350 metres they take similar game down easy.]

If you want heavier, then Sierra do those 135Gn HP projectiles for 30CAL 135GR HP BT $345 /PER 500, which is around 70 cents a shot.
[Also pretty accurate, and pretty devastating.]

If you are looking for more distance and/or weight, then though it's NOT a hunting projectile, Hornady make the 168Gn ELD-Match, which is known for excellent long-range performance, but no idea on effectiveness on animals.
Hornady do a bulk box of 1900 projectiles($989), which comes in around 52 cents per projectile.
If you can find them, the Hornady Z-Max 168Gn projectiles (Re-Branded 168 A-Max) were selling for around 53 cents a projectile if you bought the 500 packs, but they are like hens teeth to find these days; the last ones I saw/bought in .308 were in 2016.

Most of the mid-range 150gn - 168gn projectiles sells for around 65-72 cents each, and well over a dollar per projectile for the higher-end stuff.

To be honest, if you arent going for medium-long range (beyond ~350 metres), the 125Gn TNT pills would be probably your best value for money.
I'd suggest trying a box of 500 of the 125 TNT's, and see if you think they meet your needs.

*** Note: The Sierra 135gn pills I quoted above (Sierra .308 dia. 135 gr. HPBT MatchKing Stock No: 2123) seem to be the standard HP projectiles, but I find the 135Gn HP Varminter pills (Sierra .308 dia. 135 gr HP Varminter Stock No: 2124)with the crinkly mouth are about the same money.
I think it's the Buffalo River/OSA ammo thats loaded with the 135Gn Varminter pills, which I found to be quite good, and have heard others speak highly of.
Note that these projectiles are not recommended to exceed 3200fps.

The Speer TNT 125Gn pills are listed as Speer Stock Number #1985 for the box of 100, and #4725 for the box of 500. Note that Speer also make a 130Gn HP pill, which you will see loaded in the Federal factory ammo with the Australian flag on it. I've used over 1000 of these factory rounds through a .308, and they are great for Australian game out to ~400 metres.
I havent seen those 130Gn projectiles for sale in bulk anywhere(retail around 38 cents each in boxes of 100 - Speer Part No #2005), and for the price, the 125's would be worth testing.
As far as bang for buck, it would be hard to pass up the Speer TNT 125Gn pills to try out, in my opinion.
Next test would be to go up to the 130Gn Hp's.

If the TNT is too light for you, Speer also make a Hot Cor which I think start at 150 grains. You can find them for around 50c each. They work well on Piggy and other things up to about 90 kilos if the distances are reasonable.

I could be wrong, but I think he's(Reloaders Haven) closed his doors.

From what I could figure out, he's bought a block of land somewhere, and doesnt see he can keep the business running as well.
I think he closed the doors some time in the past week or two.

Before you buy any bulk projectile you'd better make sure it shoots well enough for your needs and does the job you want it to do.

Good advice Scott.

Hmm I wrote a rather long reply, looks like it's lost.

Anyway his wife bought a plane about 2 or 3 hours away. He is thinking that he will do RH website and be an online business , but i notice its been disabled. He did try and sell it, but something like that would take a bit of time to find a buyer.
