.223 reloading vs Fiocchi 55 grain ammo

Post by Jobby » 08 Feb 2019, 9:00 pm

Hey everyone, new to the Enough Gun Shooting Community and I'm guessing that I am going to post a topic that has been discussed quite a bit so, sorry.

The young fella is shooting a Weatherby .223 (1:9) and using Fiocchi 55 grain ammo. he's happy to send 50-80 rounds ($$$) down the range hitting targets at 50-100 metres and smashing a 20cm gong at 300metres consistently, But 400-500 is a bit sketchy (cheap Vortex 9-14x50)

Fiocchi 55 grain works out to be 71 cents a bullet but I want to start reloading for the him to do benchrest and also some medium range stuff (300-500m), so i'm guessing different rounds for each one? Should I just stay with Fiocchi for the benchrest and reload a ??? for 300m+

Any feedback appreciated.

Cheers,

For those longer distances and with your 1:9 twist you might want to try heavier projs to 68 or 70gn.
I can shoot that weight in my 1:9 and hit a 4inch plate at 300m consistently and am now starting to push to 450m. Ar2206h is my 223 powder.

For 100-200m I’m happy to stuff about with roo max and similar budget 55’s that will shoot 1/2 Moa on a good day with 24.5gns of AR2206h. But I’ll add that seating depth is a big factor in closing up groups - for me it was .15” off the lands.

Out to 300 flat based bullets work best, at 500 and beyond the extra BC of a longer bullet with a boat tail comes in handy Outback Ammo make some ammo using 69 grain SMK, you could try them to see how you go at 500. Or just buy a box of SMK, fill up the case with 2208 and jam the pill into the lands.

Save some money for some better optics and learn to read the wind.

South Australian Rifle Association Shop sells OSA 69g smk .223 for 50 rounds you pay $40.
At 80c a round for quality ammo you wont find a better price in Adelaide

So weird - why do peeps do that...
It’s like peeps who call up to see if you’ve still got something for sale and then you never hear again...
Or ppl that call up to say, I just sent you an email...
