Hi all,

Has anyone here used or hunted with a 70 gr speer projectile in 223?

Im working on a small/medium pig/goat round and this one looks like a puncher (see attachment).

Its $33/100 rounds.

I plan on loading with ar2206 and i have a howa 1500 24” sporter with 1 in 9 twist.

Any comment on accuracy and weight retention etc of this projectile appreciated.

Cheers

24gn of 2206 will give you about 2900 fps.More than enough for pigs and goats.I have been fortunate to have shot pigs while out doing kangaroos with my little .222 which shoots 50gn PSP at 2800 fps.I shot them in the neck side on and they fell over I got 2 out the mob on the run.Goats should not be a problem

From what I have read about the .223, when loading for 60gn projectiles and upwards, 2208 gets mentioned a lot as being suitable.

The choice for heavy pills in a 223 is between 2206h and 2208. I use 2208 with 80 grain projectiles and it works very well.

Nice call about the ar2208 guys. I gave it a try with ladder test from 23.5 to 25.5 grains. Best was 24.5gr at just a shade under 0.4 MOAat 100 yards. My usual shooting before that was with hornady TAP 60 gr Vmax ($135/200 factory ammo) and i couldnt get sub MOA with that and was usually closer to 2MOA, so i didnt think .4 was even possible with my firearm/caffeine intake/prison shank inspired front rest. I guss now ill just use the leftover TAP ammo to season the barrel after cleaning, tee up a hunt, and then fire up the charcoal grill.
