Redding seating dies scratching bullets (Nosler Ballistic T'

Post by fawksel » 02 Feb 2014, 6:17 pm

Hi guys,

A mate of mine has just started reloading for his .308 with Redding dies.

He's seating Nosler ballistic tips and the problem is the seating die scratches a section of the bullet when seating it.

It's only small, and not the whole way around the bullet.

If you imagine a ring pressed around the bullet, it's only a small mark that would be about 1/8th of the ring. Make sense?

I guess something's wrong with the die?

Suggestions?

if I remember the Redding dies right you can screw out the top piece and look at the ring of the bullet seater (whatever it's called). Do that...

Do you know if he cleaned the dies before using them? They ship with an oil which can hold a bit of junk that might be scratching the bullets.

Pull the die apart as mentioned and examine for any debris or possible a flaw in the die. The seating ring may also have a bur on it.
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?
