Reloading 60Gr sierra HP in my 223

Post by MajesticFiddler » 29 Mar 2019, 3:48 pm

Hello all i am relatively new to the reloading scene and i cant find any reload data for my specific projectile (.224 60Gr sierra HP) using the powder i have purchased ADI AR2208
although there is data for the 60Gr Hornady v-max in the ADi handbook using my powder.

should i use the specs found there as a guidelines for my projectiles?

recommendations are 25Gr minimum powder weight and 27Gr compressed maximum.

Thank You :D

I read somewhere recently about how somebody got caught out and ended up with excess pressure problems when useing powder info for a projectile of the same weight but of different brand. I’m fairly sure it had something to do with a different shape and therefore different bearing surface on the rifling .... so please don’t blow up your face this weekend at the range

you wont get any ill effects from using different brands of projectile in the same weight going by reloading manual load suggestions

where you may get into trouble with different shaped ogives on bullets is that you dont realise with one shape you are jumping your bullet but another shape you are jamming or touching the lands that may cause a pressure spike causing excessive pressure

the sierra manual has the load for this bullet starting at 23.5gr and a maximum at 26.7gr using varget which is adi 2208 just rebranded
dont be scared of going to the 27gr that adi recommends as a max load for a different bullet

i would also like to add that I have used this bullet and found it to be a hammer
it hits really hard and I would have no hesitation using it on fallow deer out to 300 if it were legal
good luck with it :drinks:

Thank you Marksman i was only going to load to minimum recommended 25G that adi specified which seems to fall roughly in the middle of sierras suggested loads.

and AZZA ill be using this for a hunting round. and if they fly well enough ill put them to the range also

You won't go wrong starting at 25 grains no matter what brass you are using. Work up until you run out of room. I use 55 grain Vmax in my 223 on foxes, small goats and pigs. As long as you don't go for difficult or long range shots it does the job.
