45-70 loading help

Post by Diddums » 16 Apr 2019, 8:44 pm

I bought a box of 350g speer hot-cor projectiles to load into my 45-70 but if I load them to the canneluer they are way too long, 0.160 to be exact.
I used standard size brass but do have a heap or shorter Hornady brass.
How short can I trim 45-70 brass in order to fit these projectiles. The brass will need to be a bit shorter than the Hornady brass is already.

What rifle? Have you done a chamber caste and measured?
Max case length 2.105", trim to 2.100".

Is there any requirement to load to the cannelure?
Just load to the required length and crimp them.

.45/70 headspaces on the rim, so trim length is something you can play around with. 2.10 inches is standard maximum trim length.
I gather you are loading for a lever action and your C.O.L is too long for the lifter?

Contacted speer and those projectiles aren't made to work in lever action 45-70s

Unless they have a flat point they shouldn't be used in a tube mag, but you can run them singularly.
