Reloading equipment for .223 .243 .308 and .300 Win Mag

Post by Faedy » 17 Apr 2019, 9:25 am

Its time to get back into reloading
I used to do a fair bit years ago for my .222 and 32.20.
I have an old super simplex turret press and .222 dies still.
I want to reload for
.223
.243
.308
.300winmag
Obviously I'll need a new press, so Im open to suggestions plz

I use an old simplex now, and it works very well. Don’t discount them just because they are old. You loose the ability to full length resize but in most cases that doesn’t matter.

if you didn't already have the press I would suggest a new lot of reloading gear
something that suits lee collet dies
but since you have a simplex press, you can get all your simplex gear including FLS hand dies from

Simplex engineering pty ltd
W.Marden 02 9758 1280
12 garema circiut
kings grove NSW 2208

I still use a simplex turret press with 5/8 dies for forming 17 ackley brass

From what I can see, the s/simplex .222 dies will suit the .223 as neck sized only - can anyone confirm?

I would say yes just adjust the die to suit,
eg... adjust the die till you only size the 223 neck and adjust the depriming rod till you pop the primer
the 5/8 dies are a neck die and you should be able to do the 223 no worries as the 222 neck is longer
I dont know if it would work the other way around, 5/8 simplex 223 neck dies to neck size the 222 :unknown:

here is there web site http://simplexreloading.com/

I would use what you have and I wouldn't bother sizing the entire neck of the 223 case. A half or even less is enough to hold the bullet. If you find someone selling their gear at bargain prices then you can trade up.

The more accurate way of describing simplex dies should be 22 csl, 30 cal etc. they will all work on any of the 22 cal centrefires. The only thing that varies is the shell holder , 22 hornet is different to 222,223, 221 fireball family.

I have two presses. I use my Lyman O Frame press for sizing dies, and my Lyman T Mag turret press for seating dies. The O frame is stronger, so is great for sizing, and FLS dies can be changed simply. Seating dies can be left in the turret press once set up.

So perhaps use your Simplex press like I use my turret press, and get an O frame for sizing. Dies will be different though, which is a down side. In our case (me and the old man), we have a simplex press too, but it is unused nowadays.

+1 for the collet dies, I have made some very straight ammo using these dies. For the price you won't do better.
