Subsonic .223 ADI powder

Post by lowb » 19 May 2019, 6:09 pm

Hi guys,

I'm looking at doing a quite .223 load, and started with the ADI reloading data on their website.

www.adi-powders.com.au/rifle/223-remington

It says though that even with the heaviest bullet and the starting load that the slowest FPS muzzle velocity is 2270 fps. That's with Bench Mark 8208 just FYI.

Is it not possible to do subsonic .223 loads at all? or just not with ADI powders?

Mate there is some literature around on using AR2206H for reduced loads. Have a look at this thread.

Think it is on the ADI loading data website with regard to the percentage.

Quiet. Look at AR2206H or Trail Boss. AR2206H 60% of max load as a start. Trail Boss fill to the bottom of seated projectile weigh and start with 70%.

Use Lyman’s cast bullet reloading guide.
Below is for reference only.
Gives lead cast bullet subsonic loads for all calibers and bullet weights. Similar to Sergeants comments, trail boss is the go, usually 80% of case capacity. Case capacity is when you fill the whole case up with powder then remove enough to seat the projectile to its correct depth without compression. You then take 80% of that capacity as your mid load.
P.s. this works for jacketed bullets as well.

Trailboss, you can load way down - I've had .243 down below 300fps.

Yep, although two of them needed an extra shove, they managed 20" of my 22" under their own steam :-)
I pulled a bullet from another round and used the charged case to help one out, the second was my last round so I pushed it out with a rod when I got back.
I found one of the bullets laying in the grass when I walked up to the targets afterward.

Four grains of Trail boss should get you subsonic with a 50 grain pill.

ADI reloading manual says 4 gr Trailboss with Hornady 55gr FMJ for 1074 fps, 3.2 gr AS30N for 1060 fps

A thread here on it by Gwion https://enoughgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3112
