Electronic scales vs Phone calls...what the?

Post by TassieTiger » 01 Sep 2019, 7:57 pm

I was loading up a few 300’s this evening listening to a pod cast, my elec scales were stable at 66.0gns....when the phone rang.

It was really interesting to note that as I pulled my phone from my pocket the scales started registering heavier and heavier - up to 70.0gns once I’d answered.

After the call ended - I started my pod cast again and watched as the scales varied by .5gns depending on which pocket I had phone in - and how close it was to the scales...

Be interested to see if other ppls scales do this...?

Most of the cheap ones will do that mate. Remember when you have phones next to a speaker and it starts to make noises when a calls comes in

These are hornady scales and auto powder trickler all in one - probably normal I’ve just never. Prices it previously.

I have the Hornady auto trickler. I don’t have the phone in reloading room when I’m using it. I had heard just having the phone near it can cause interference. I’m pretty sure goes for all electronic devices.

Last night my old rcbs balance beam didn't want to settle, then I realised the problem was my phone speaker. If I paused my podcast, scales were happy, if I started it again scales wouldn't settle. I've never had this before yet I have the podcast going and the phone in the same spot every time I reload. Must of been something about the air and the vibration were the perfect combination last night

Very interesting information. I never knew. I don’t usually have my phone near me when I load, no distractions. I normally fire up the record player in the other room and listen to something relaxing. Early dire straits, eagles or something similar. :D

Could be dangerous. What if it changed the other way and you over loaded a few grains?.

Absolutely OB - that’s one of the reasons bringing it up.
I had heard about inductions from various electronics etc - but I encourage everyone to check their scales with their phone. My wife as a large xr phone and that was affecting the scales from about 1.5 foot!!!

Sometimes if I’m playing elec guitar I get truck drivers conversations coming though my amp. All sorts of things get affected. If fact if my dog ever breaks into my neighbours house and kills 32 chickens I fully intend blaming them for haveing a mobile phone in their house

Cheap scaled including the hornady and even the rcbs charge master type scales just don't have emf insulation.

I have this old lab scale for reloading now, and even then I won't pour phone right next to it
