9mm APS450 loads

Post by goat » 29 Mar 2020, 1:41 pm

Time to work up a load using APS450 as im almost out of AP70 and cant get hold of any more

Currently I'm loading for a Shadow 2 - 3.8gn of AP70 @ 1.06 OAL with a Westcasting 124gn LRN and federal small pistol primers. I haven't chrono'd it but it feels pretty poppy and im sure i could use less powder if i chose to.

I'm thinking of using the same gear as above but starting with 2.6 gns of APS450...bit of an estimate based on loads from the ADI website and at the lower end of their recommendations. Would appreciate feedback from those that have used it or have anything to add

Worst part is i cant event get to the range to test if its any good or not :x

Pretty soon I think there will be lots of gumtree trading on powder and things that we just used to be able to easily buy

Looking at the online loading data, to get the same sort of velocities as your 3.8gn AP70 (993fps), you probably are getting to their max loads for APS450 (3.4gn for 999fps). Safe start is probably pretty good at 2.6gn or even 2.8. Work on getting a load that works well for you, then refine it to get best accuracy at the distances you are shooting.

Did you work it out in the end? My X Calibur wont cycle 135gn projectiles on less than 3.6gn AP450

I have been reloading for my Beretta 92FS with APS450, no problems.
I am using 124gr tiger shark projectiles.

I'm using APS450 with Tigershark projectiles
4.0gr on a 124gr Plated RN - ~1070fps
3.4gr on a 145gr Plated HP - ~922fps

My primers are flattening a bit, I'm hoping its because they are Federal SPP which are supposedly soft, I'm going to try some others shortly to see if it makes any difference, but mostly because the federal boxes take up too much room.

ADI's load data won't cycle my pistols.

Just had a look in my powder locker and found 2 x 500g AP70N and another 500g container with some left in it. No longer shoot a 9mm. Anyone in Sydney interested?

Not so sure. However I have old off unwanted powder to members of my pistol club with no problems. I did keep a record of what, how much, when and to whom it went to though.

Just double checked with my local supplier who stated that there is no problem disposing of powder to another appropriate licensed person. This is in NSW.

With my own 124gr round nose bullets, bevel based and Hi Tek coated using 2.6gr of APS450 gives me an average of 820fps out of a Colt 1911 (9mm) with 5" barrel. I used Starline brass and Federal standard small pistol primers.

You would most likely see 900fps or a little more with 3.0gr of the # 450 powder.

I use the same powder with my 135gr RN bullets with 2.4gr and see 800fps with that combo.

Both bullets are sized to .356" but I have a new mould set coming to make 135gr RN with flat top and will size those to .3565" or even .357" Will test both in different guns based on barrel and rifling bore dimensions. Somehow I think the larger diameter bullet will work better in most 9mm guns as far as potential accuracy is concerned.

Hey mate, 135 gn coated round nose (black widow) , I get 1/10 failures using 3.4gn. 3.6 is punchy - almost feels like factory.

Springfield and Shadow 1 works aok on 3.3 or 3.4 gn. Not sure why the GP is so finnicky with ammo. Have been tempted to sell it many times but its my most accurate semi by far - 50m no problem.

I can run small powder loads with perfect cycling by just changing to lighter recoil springs. Are there alternative springs available for your guns?

Current springs are the lightest factory ones.

Bad luck. That's the advantage with 1911's you can buy a huge range of aftermarket spring weights. Maybe there are aftermarket ones available for yours. I would be surprised if the CZ is not catered for in aftermarket options.

Yeah its not the CZ that is the problem, it is the Grand Power X Calibur. The X Cal has some similarities with the cz - maybe I can find a spring to suit? I.l just stick with 3.6 gn of ap450, the gun can handle it no problem

If the GP X is similar to the CZ mechanically you should also try springs to suit the IWI (Israeli) Jericho. I have 2 of those and magazines and much more for those interchange with the CZ. A few Tanfoglios are the same as CZ and Jericho Baby Eagles.
