Necking up 243 to 7mm-08 brass

Post by heeple » 11 Mar 2014, 3:22 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking to neck up .243 brass into 7mm-08 brass.

I have dies for both and put a couple of cases through to test the waters. They size up, but it's quite difficult to do... A lot of force is required.

Also I do notice that examining the necks, it appears to not quite be even on some. Once side of the neck is just noticeably thinner, like a weaker bit of the neck doing more stretching than the rest.

There are no dies in the middle of these to use and an intermediate step right? I know if guys are going from something like .308 down to .243 they might use a 7mm-08 die in the middle to do it in smaller steps.

Since that's the case, any advice for resizing this more consistently without a middle die?

Thanks.

It's a simple job for the right tool.

Here is a K&M neck expander with my 6mm and 7mm expander mandrels. I just lube it and run every case through it

I bought mine from BRT in Brisbane

Annealing the necks could be worth looking into as well to soften them.

Not essential, but good practice anyway.

.243 brass to 7mm-08

Post by heeple » 24 Mar 2014, 6:18 pm

Thanks guys.

I did a small batch of 20 rounds with the 7mm-08 die only which I'll be testing on the weekend and see how they go. I did them up before the info on the mandrels so will shoot em and see how they go now.

I'll give the guys at BRT a call tomorrow about the mandrel.

Couldn't find it on their website Chronos? You remember how much it was by any chance?

the expander tool with one mandrel (specify calibre) is $26 on the BRT site http://www.benchrest.com.au/casebulletp ... nd-m-tools

KMEXP K & M Expanderon Tool (includes one caliber mandrel) $26.00

KMEM K & M Expander Mandrel only (specify calibre) $14.00

they have flat rate shipping so it's worth looking around the site for some other stuff to buy, they have good prices on cases and bullets

What about a 260 die?

I missed the .260 Rem.

For some reason I thought the .260 was a different case and couldn't be necked for 7mm-08 (or .243 or .308 or whatever you want).

I thought it was a different family but I'm wrong?

Yeah 243 is 6mm, 260 is 6.5mm 7-08 is 7mm obviously, (.284 of an inch ) and 308 is 7.62mm, all based off the 308. There is also a 358 Winchester as well.

25-06 and 270(6.8mm) and 35 Whelan are based off 30-06

22-250 isn't based off the 308, is from 250-3000 & 300 savage.
