308 budget reload recomendation

Post by petemacsydney » 15 Mar 2014, 11:42 am

Hi guys, getting ready to do my first reload.. I am wondering if you can recommend primers, powders and bullets for a budget conscious reload.. (of course I don't want to buy innacuate crap though ;-)
I'll be using them for 80% target, 20% hunting. Nothing big on the hunt, mainly medium sized pigs, some fox and sand flies...
So far I have thought of this...

Hornady ajax 155gr grazing
Fed gold medal large rifle primer
Adi powder

It seems to come out at about $1.20 per round, which is a little more than I would like. Maybe I am being unrealistic on cost.

Anyway, would love to hear what your bullet, primer, powder combos are!

Cheers pete
PS, brass is once fired federal premium tactical being shot through a tikka t3 varmint in 308

you can buy nosler custom comp 155gr 30cal bullets for around 35c each if you buy in bulk, add 44-47gr of 2208 from a 4kg tub, federal LR match primer and you should have a load that if f class legal, can be tuned for accurate shooting and although it's a target bullet, a lot of hunters are using the CC

this load should run you closer to 65c per shot as per my post in your "cost per shot thread"

PS: it sounds like you're using the Amax but you probably paid too much for them, i bought 500 a while back at a good price. i'll pm you details

Bulks always cheapest, e.g. the Nosler Custom Comps come in boxes of 500 I think?

For smaller lots Sierra is priced well and make good bullets.

Game kings for hunting, match kings for target shooting.

I use custom comps in my 308 for range work. No idea what they're like on game. They're cheap as though if you're prepared to buy 1000. I use 2206H in my 308 and am running 42gr so if you're really budget concious it could be a better choice than 2208 based on loads quoted above

Thx. Must admit, I know absolutely nothing about different types of powders, so need to do some research there!

Pretty sure the price is the same for the different powders.

2206H, 2208, 2209 etc. all the same...

Yeah they look pretty similar. Interesting to see the whole fast/slow burn differences on the adi site, I kinda just assumed everything good would be fast... little did I know..

If it's burning faster than you can get the bullet out of the rifle though... kaboom

It's gotta go out somewhere else.

You don't want that :D
