Post by Blr243 » 27 Jul 2020, 6:03 pm

I will be , In a marlin Shooting fast loads 250 weight and some trailboss loads 500 weight ...in the past loading 357 pistol I have never had success crimping. Is this a skill I need in my new lever gun ? It may affect my choice of dies

i've used a LEE set as bigpete recomended, for a 357 mag marlin i had . it's not to hard to work out if you follow the directions . just don't over flare the case mouth, make sure the case length and COL are right . don't over crimp either, it can deform the case and upset feeding . hope this helps BLR .

cheers

The factory crimp dies aren't the same as the normal roll crimp dies. Normal roll crimp dies are a pain in the arse

Thanks for the input. It was only another 28 bucks for the factory crimp die so I will get the original set and the factory crimp , and then I shall do a bit more research and experimentation

For what it's worth I didn't crimp my subsonic loads and they shot 0.87MOA out of the Marlin with 400gn Black Widows and 13gn Trailboss.

I'd crimp anything else though as the recoil may shift them a bit in the tube as mentioned above.

TT it’s cool to be going down the same path at the same time , and great to know there’s already some experienced 4570 loaders already here if we get in any tricky situations during load development or whatever

Boingk , Is your accurate trailboss 400 grain load shootable Of the bench as is ,or more comfortable with a good recoil pad ?and as I have not shot completely Lead Projectiles for 15 years , can u recommend a lead remover for the bore ?

Very shootable mate, no issues at all in terms of fatigue. A pad will help but isn't necessary IMO, especially this time of year if you're wearing a jumper or coat.

I haven't found any significant leading with the coated Widow projectiles however I haven't pushed them to any fantastic speeds. By far the majority of my shot loads so far have been the subsonics. What residue there has been I've removed with a simple brush followed by patching.
