12g covers / caps / plastic see through

Post by TassieTiger » 07 Aug 2020, 3:22 pm

Forgive my ignorance - what are the caps that you crimp your 12g shells into called ? They can be plastic for water proofing or Ive seen many use paper - I need the name of them so I can find some. I need to weather proof a few shells.

Do you mean the "plate" that holds the shot in the shell?
Over-shot cards.
I don't recall who, but somebody posted about some cheap plastic Ebay "chips" that fit perfectly, but they do leave plastic debris in your paddocks. Cardboard is a better choice. You can use virtually anything though, paper, card, plastic, metal, wood, cork, etc, or just plug the end of the shell with wax. For the .44 Magnum I bought cork wads.

If you want to actually seal the shell you'll either want a very neat fit, or use a sealant around the edge, which will also remove the need to crimp.

These are proper ones.

If you're only doing a few you can just cut some out by hand, or order a punch.

G'day Tassie Tiger,
I buy all my felt, cork and card wads from Track of the Wolf in the US, always great to deal with. hit their website to see the range and pricing. They also sell neat little stamps to stamp the shot size on the card if you want them to look smick! In both plastic and brass shotshell I use PVA wood glue to seal the overshot card, just run a thin bead around the edge and let sit for a day or so, Cheers.

Tassie,

You can also make them with a 17mm wad punch.......

https://www.ebay.com.au/c/2260063504

and a cardboard box....

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/30-MOVING-P ... ctupt=true

Bahaha! Had to post that link....Can't believe they sell those on ebay.

If you use the end grain in a piece of hardwood as a base for the punch you will get hundreds out of that. If you want to waterproof them, lay down some clear plastic packing tape on top of the cardboard before you punch 'em out.
Regards,

Jarhead

That's what I have done. Waxy milk cartons would be good I reckon. Biodegradable and water resistant

Oldbloke,

I made heaps of these- not for a shot cap but as a wad "filler" for 12g 7/8 oz loads when I couldn't get any 7/8oz wads and had to use 1 oz wads......2 cardboard spacers per shell did the trick! I also had some 3 mm cork gasket material which worked just as well.
