30.06 plinking load

Post by Heathen » 09 Aug 2020, 2:25 pm

just aquaired an 1918 M17 in 30.06 and looking to develop a plinking load.
I have a range of powder including Trail boss and wanted to use 220gr cast lead projectiles.
Anyone done this already?

30.06? That's are pretty big plinker. A hell of a step up from the humble 22. Not sure about trail boss. There is a method for developing loads etc. Let us know how you get on. :)

My favorite for plinking is Berry's .311" 123gn Copper-Plated bullet on 15gn of Trailboss doing 1700fps in my 1903-A3, quiet on the ears, accurate, and cheap.

The plinking load I used for 15 years was a 150 grain Sierra or Hornady projectiles and 60 grains of 2209 worked a treat also used it for hunting I used to go through about 300 a month

Yep, it's a hardcast lead bullet that's copper-plated. Even a jacketed .311" bullet will shoot fine in a .308" bore, it just swages down. But the cartridge might not fit the chamber with a fat bullet seated in it.
The bullet is designed for the 7.62x39mm but it shoots terribly in my Mosins and Enfields.

17gns of Trail Boss and a 150 gn cast bullet makes a .30-06 as cheap to shoot as a .22 and not much louder. Just aim higher to allow for the lower velocity.
I found though that Using stripper clips to load my FN Mauser does not help one conserve ammo :-)
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.
