Does anyone recognise who would of made this 577 die set?

Post by Kelsey Cooter » 16 Aug 2020, 12:47 am

So I bought this 577 snider die set tonight and I can't work out who would of made it.

It is a 2 die set with standard 7/8 threads, the expander is in the resizing die.

The resize die is stamped- 577 snider size
The seating die has stamped- 577 snider seat

Each letter has been individually stamped

Any ideas who would of made these dies?

There used to be a die maker named Peter Davern if I remember correctly here in Victoria. He made a set of dies for me in 450/400 and they looked similar to these. So its possible.

Thats a name I havent heard for a long time. Peter was the go-to for custom dies , particularly big bores. I was looking to get him to make me some for a wildcat bigbore about 20 years ago but he had poor health at the time. I presume he passed away since. madang185 can I ask what year he made yours?

The other idea depending how keen you are is call the old guard of the Aus firearms industry and see if you can flick them a picture.
I'd try Bruce Bertram of bertram brass, Geoff Mcdonald of Woodleigh bullets, Allan Naumman of Corporal Trading, Alan Swann the QLD gunsmith,. Rolf Bachnick of Safari Arms, Graeme Spraggon the barrel guy etc.

Thanks for the info Madang and Mickb. They seem really good quality, and I'm a fan of them having the standard thread so I don't have to buy a press for the large thread.

I thought it's interesting there is not a seperate expander die.
