Are certain powders better suited to lead projectiles

Post by Kelsey Cooter » 01 Sep 2020, 3:04 pm

Amongst conversations on here and other platforms, people seem to always steer towards 2206h when talking about lead projectiles.

So it got me wondering, are there powders are are really good with lead and others that aren't?

Yes, fast powders.
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?

One word: Trailboss.

If you're after a cheap, efficient plinker for range use then thats the go. Full cases, fast burns, very low density and it runs into a wall at 1400~1500fps so won't get into leading velocities.

Lots of fun to thrash out some big old cast projectiles backed with Trailboss.

Black powder. Perfect!
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Yeah trailboss is the main powder I use for all my fun guns. But I'm often left looking for a bit more velocity

medium speed powders like AR2205, AR2207, AR2206H can be safely reduced, as seen by factory data for reduced loads with these powders (or rebranded USA equivalents). For example ~19gr AR2207 is ideal behind a ~160gr lead 30/30 pill yielding ~1600fps. Look at the single action data on ADI. I’ve shot lead out of a 308 before using the old AR2206 60% trick and it worked out just fine.

Just bump the buttstock on the ground before your string, to get the powder positioned back on to the primer. FWIW similarly I use a 4/5 case of AR2206H in my 303 (under a jacketed match pill), for the reduced recoil, and I’m becoming convinced bumping the buttstock at the start of each string helps with my scores.

Thanks in2anity, I've just bought 4kg of 2207 actually. Wanted it for 45/70 and 30-30.

Actaully saw a couple of blokes on the net saying they use 2206h in their 32-20's. I would of thought the 06h would of been too slow

I reckon you'd see unburnt AR2206H granules out of the 32-20. Would make for an interesting experiment though.

That is exactly what I thought.

I've been trying some 2205 rounds in my 25-20 and keep getting a bit of unburnt powder actually. I need to play with them more, wondering if a heavier crimp is the answer
