Anyone use Nickel plated brass?

Post by Yelp » 01 Aug 2013, 11:42 am

A mate of mind is in the process of off loading some of his gear as he's built up a bit of an excessive collection of FA gear and reloading components etc.

Among it are a few bags of nickel plated brass which has got me curious... Anyone shoot with this?

Wondering if it's worth sending a few dollars his way for them and giving nickel a go. Never had any problems with regular brass obviously, but it never hurts to try something new...

This is the stuff we're talking about, right?

I'd be interested to know everyone's opinions too.

I don't use them, but I believe corrosion resistance is the primary benefit?

Great for if you hunt in Canada or somewhere with a harsh climate a couple of times a year where you need a box of bullets to last a while.

Outside of that...?

Nickel cases are less prone to jamming/sticking too if I recall correctly?

Correct.

Nickel is a bit more slippery than regular brass and does feed better in some rifles if they're a little fussy.

It's more brittle however and compared to regular brass doesn't last long when reloading.

Blackened's explanation is on the money. If you need a box of ammo to last in a while in a tough climate, pick up a box of nickel plated factory ammo.

I suppose if you've got a pissed off Polar Bear bearing down on you, the extra slippery case couldn't hurt either, lol.

For the majority of hunters and for target shooting there's no benefit IMO.
See you on the firing line.

Luckily, we don't get too many Polar Bear's in Queensland

I'll load up one box to keep in the bag just in case :P
