Anyone shot the 60gr Partition

Post by Am88 » 06 Oct 2020, 12:07 pm

Thinking of giving them a go, not as a plinking round obviously. Going through the process of load development for my .222mag again, had a bit of a break due to 6 month old boy. But back into it again, now that I also have a family 4wd I will be setting the ute up more for shooting and fishing, it was pretty wife friendly before, not as much now. On top of the canopy will be a removable padded shooting bar. Primary use is deer, both out of my .222mag and wife's .223 when she can get back to it. Last thing I want is a neck wound where a bullet hasn't done its job. I'm always paranoid about my bullets after a few failures on head shot roos with highly frangible bullets.

Is the 222mag factory 1:14 twist? Might need 1:12 at a minimum to stabilise 60gr. No direct experience with the partition projectile.

Is the 223 fast twist

In my 12 twist 223 they stabilised but hovered a bit below 50mm groups at 100m. Haven't shot any game with em as yet.

I get under inch groups with 53gn tsx.

No Mate just a 12 twist .223. I found another option being 55gr Oryx by Norma, might be worth a look too

G'day Am88 , mate i use Oryx 154gr in my 7mm and i find them perfect they hold together well and shoot well i'm getting 12-16 mm moa which is as good as any other bullet , only one thing with them is they're a little pricy but not too bad.

l have in the past had issues with 55gr frangible bullets head shooting roos,
l found l had to keep my shots at around 120 and shoot in the back of the head for better success, sometimes having to pass up a shot or waiting a while before the shot presented. what l use in my 22-250 successfully is 50gr nosler shots that has a 1 in 14" twist but have found 60gr sierra hp's hard hitting and do the job no worries in my 22 dasher https://www.sierrabullets.com/product/2 ... -60-gr-hp/

Yes marksman i found that with the dogs with the 55gr vmax in 22 250 , when i first started using them 10yrs or so ago they were very good but the last yr or so i've seen a change in the knock down power of them , some blow up and dropped the dog instantly and some pencil straight through , leaving me looking for a dog instead of looking at a dead dog, since changing my barrel i've started using the standard sp 52gr hornady f/base but stepped the speed up from 3414fps with the 55gr to 3850fps with the 52gr and they ''Kill'' perfectly and cheaper also deadly accurate

If I’m useing a light calibre for smaller stuff and there’s a possibility of a bigger animal. , and I want a tougher projectile I go straight to a Barnes x. Costs me a fortune but I’m not buying packets of them

Hi All, once I swapped to the Sierra 1365 Game Kings I had much better results on the roo's. but, have had mixed success with them on the deer hence want something different. the oryx is saying it's bonded, that would be a great little bullet by the look

Cheap to try would be the Speer 70gr semi spitzer (supposed to be a stout enough projectile). Some places recommend 1:10 or faster twist but I can find references on the successful use in 1:12 twist.
Not tried them myself.
That the Partiton is shorter than the Speer would then suggest it might also work in a 1:12 twist.
This to give you an idea
Length (inch)
Nosler0.224 60 gr Partition 0.790
Sierra 0.224 55 gr HPBT (GameKing) 0.715
Sierra 0.224 63 gr SMP (Varminter) 0.755
Sierra 0.224 65 gr SBT (GameKing) 0.852
Speer 0.224 70 gr Semi-Spitzer SP 0.808
Barnes 0.224 53 gr TSX Flat Base 0.792
Hornady 0.224 60 gr Spire Point 0.750
Norma 0.224 55 gr Oryx NFI

Would be great if Woodleigh made a 55gr PP SN. But can't have everything
