For Travellers on boats - ammo carriage ?

Post by TassieTiger » 28 Oct 2020, 4:25 pm

Quick query for those that might know more - few friends travelling to SA on a hunting trip and just discovered that legally - boat carriage on the spirit means they cannot carry reloaded ammunition.
Now target shooters etc must traverse in and out of the state so how does one remain within the law and utilise reloads via travelling on the spirit or similar ??

cant carry reloaded? what is the difference as far as the law is concerned? obvious target shooters want their optimum round, but from a safety/security point of view what the heck is the difference between that and factory???

They consider the ammo to have been modified or tampered with.

I was going to suggest hiring your own boat, but the fares are bloody good. $198 return - including the Landcruiser ute is just amazing!
Flying in is an option, but I don't know if they'll take ammo as unaccompanied freight.

If you can find out how Tasmania keeps any supply of blackpowder you might learn something.

Yes - they somehow conclude that reloads are not as stable as fs Tory = dangerous...

G'day TassieTiger,
No real way around it I'm afraid. Last trip to Blue Hills saw us buy ammo on arrival in Hobart. One bloke has a friend with a plane at Tooradin and he offered to fly our ammo over to Tassie after his usual King Island run, but the timing was not suitable. Without a plane or boating friend the only other option is to put the ammo in original packaging and pretend it is factory, Cheers.

Can't you just stick them in a Winchester box and call them factory?

Cheers fellas - I figured it was a long shot.
Given it goes into their care before boarding, one struggles with their concerns, but what ever...
