Anyone reloading 300WM with 200gn Speer

Post by JimTom » 19 Nov 2020, 3:05 pm

G’day Gents,

As the title suggests I was wondering if anyone has had any success with 200gn Speer projectiles out of a 300WM?
I have just purchased a box to try. I have 2209, 2213sc, and 2217 to load with.
Does anyone think one powder may yield better results than the other?

Hi Jim Tom
I load mine with 2213sc. 180gr interlock with 1 inch group at 100 meters.
My mate swears by 2209. He uses it with good results on deer.
I have tried various projectiles over time with varying results on game, it was driving me batty, so I decided to draw a line in the sand and pick one that works well in my gun and put the matter to rest.
Sorry I can't be of more help. :unknown:

All good mate thanks for the reply. I have been trying some 178gn ELD X with 2209 and 2213sc with average results. Lucky to hold a two inch group with them.
Will try the Speer with 2209 and 2213sc and see how they go.

Hi Jim Tom
I would play with charge weights a little. I noticed when I was load testing I went down a whole grain and the group tightened up quit a bit. I was chasing a fast load and when I dropped the powder weight it all came together. I then played with the seating depth and that gave me the grouping I wanted.
To clarify a little, I had a load I worked up, worked well. Then I tried a different projectile, with that same charge weight, that was my problem. I tried to save a bit of time, but it caused me problems.
With the new projectile, I should have started my ladder testing from the beginning.
As the barrel in my rifle was a thin fluted one, I only shot 3 round groups. And had to wait for the barrel to cool. The way I see it, it’s a hunting rifle not a target rifle, so in the field I will not be shooting more than two in a row too, quickly.
Ladder testing is fun. Good luck

Have tried multiple loads mate with 2209 and 2213 but nothing superZ like you I have a fluted hunting barrel so only fire a few groups each visit, takes time but enjoyable nonetheless. Thanks mate.
