Win748 alternative for .222Rem

Post by MtnMan » 08 Dec 2020, 7:00 am

Hi, new to the forum. have lurked for a while but a recent experience has prompted me to join. I don't shoot as much as I used to as I mostly hunt with a recurve bow now. As I don't shoot as often as I used to, I don't buy components very often. I went to buy some Win748 powder for my .222 recently only to be told that winchester no longer imports powder. So it looks as though I have to source an alternative powder.
for 20 years my load has been winchester cases and primers, 25gr of win748 and 50gr sierra soft point #1330 bullet. a couple of years ago i had to replace the brass and couldn't source either winchester cases or primers so i changed to sellior and bellot cases and CCI primers. had to drop back to 24gr of powder. the S&B cases must have a smaller capacity as pressure was too high with my standard 25gr charge.

I'm the kind of guy who finds what works then uses it for the term of my natural life so it pains me to now to have to change powders.

any suggestions? looking for something that is likely to be available into the future. though if i find something that works i might buy a lifetime supply.

thanks

You are in luck, some of the best powder in the world are made here in Australia. For you, the best results for the 222 shooting 50 grain pills can be obtained from Benchmark 8208. No need to go shopping for inferior powders anymore.

Try any of these ADI powders. If you have other centrefires 2208 & 2206H are very versatile powders.

I tried adi 8208 once and have been using it ever since. I rate 8208 for any 22 cal round with the exception of 22-250

adi 2206h is the equivalent to IMR 4895 that is the best powder for the 222 and 50gr bullets

l have recently done some testing using adi 2207 and 40gr bullets very successfully, my mate has a good load using adi 2207 with 50gr bullets

was talking to the guy at the gunshop today when I ordered a lithgow LA101. when I mentioned AR2206H for the .222 rem he suggested AR2207 or BM1. think I'll try AR2206H first mainly because I want to try some reduced loads with 40gr bullets and I also want to try some reduced loads in my .270 with 110gr bullets so AR2206H. If AR2206H full loads with 50gr bullets is less than satisfactory then I can try the AR2207 or BM1.

With my limited knowledge I agree AR2206H. Or if you have it in stock AR2208.

I've also noticed it's hard to get 1lb bottles of powder. 1kg seems to be the standard now. that's a lot of powder to buy just to try something.
