Reloading 243 with AR2213SC

Post by Justo87 » 27 Mar 2014, 7:21 pm

Hi everyone,

I have a Lee Loader in 243win.

ADI2213S & 70grain HP Berger projectiles & CCI large primers.

The 2.5 powder scoop is coming in at 36.7 - 37.1grain using this powder.

Has any one used this charge before? I have load data from the Nick Harvey hand book that says 47gr staring load. 50gr max for 2213SC.

The reason for this question is I don't have a powder trickler.

The powder works great in my 270 though.

I'd have thought 70gr pills are a bit light for powder that slow?

Any reason you started with 2213 specifically?

Yeah I thought that as well? It's the only powder I have available. My local gun shop doesn't have any thing else I have load data for. I use it in my 270 with the lee loader I bought the 270 off a mate who made a scoop for it by citing off a cartridge. I bought a scale today to make sure it doesn't go over max with the scoop.

Buy a Powder Trickler and certainly don't use the weight available from your powder scoop. In general it is dangerous to use less than minimum recommended powder loads, especially 10gr less.

You can use AR2213SC with the 70gr bullets at recommended powder weights but you are going to suffer with less velocity than ideal, no idea what sort of accuracy you might get. The powder really is too slow.

You would do far better using AR2208 which will give you nearly 200fps extra velocity or AR2209.

If you can't get AR2208 or AR2209 then think about Reloader 15 or Winchester 760 but watch out for the W 760 being temperature sensitive especially if you are using the high end loads. Reloader 15 is a very good powder.

Thanks Apollo if I can get my hands on some AR2208 I will. I think I may have to buy a powder trickler. I thought 10gr below was a lot. ADI say this powder can be used with 90gr bullets but I'll still probably have to buy a trikler

The load data that comes with the lee loader say win 760 for 90gr loads the most versatile powder on the data sheet is H4895 which My local gun shop says you can't get in aus at the moment?? Have you heard of it I think it must be a hornady powder?

H4895 is ADI's AR2206H. Manufactured by ADI and sent in bulk containers to Hodgdon in the USA who simply then package it in their own smaller containers.
Most all ADI powders are sent to Hodgdon and relabeled, they are exactly our powders. The "H" is for Hodgdon" and they call it their "Extreme" powder range.

AR2206H is the opposite end of the powder range for your 70gr bullets in a .243W and too fast, again you will suffer a loss of velocity,it really is more suitable for lighter bullets like the 55gr. It is what I use for my 55gr Hornady V-Max in my .243W.

The list is here.... http://www.hodgdon.com/msds.html

Look at the list of Extruded Powders to see all the equivalent names as sold in the USA and listed in their reloading data.

Hodgdon by the way do all the load testing of powders at their own testing facility in the USA then send the data to ADI to publish here in the ADI Reloading Manual. All the figures are exactly the same, my information comes direct from a friend at ADI.

I have used W760 but I got better results with ADI AR2208. I do a lot of load testing and it's not unusual for me to try 3 different powder for the same weight bullet to see which performs the best. I sometimes may use a different powder for different bullet brands of the same weight. These days I tend to use only Berger Bullets and buy in bulk.

BTW, I compare a lot of loading data from several manuals before making a decision on which to test first. My own opinion is that I don't like the Lee Data and seldom look at their manual. I first look at ADI but what I do is go to the Hodgdon site and download data for a specific calibre on one page to print out. Hodgdon list a lot of other powders so it's good to compare.

For a specific bullet weight I look at the range of velocities, they are listed from slowest to fastest generally and I will go for a powder that delivers a velocity in the middle of the range. Sometimes one slightly higher or lower will produce the best accuracy. All those tests are done with a Chronograph and the ES (Extreme Spread) plus SD (Standard Deviation) are recorded over 10 rounds if possible when I get close to the right load.

For the .243W the main powders I use are AR2206H for light, AR2208 for medium and AR2209 for the heavier bullets up to 100gr in weight which is about my maximum weight for my 1:10 Twist Varmint Barrel.

I have a friend visiting in a couple of weeks who has a brand new .243W Tikka T3 so I will be doing a lot of test loads for him from my bullet selection of more than a half dozen different weights. Around 70-80gr I find the most accurate weight but I have some special Berger Bullets just under that weight which may ge a good run like the 64gr Column, 65gr & 68gr Target which are all good for varminting as well. Then I have some 90gr Berger BT to test in both out rifles.

Your 260 Remington isn't that much different to my 6.5x47 Lapua except your can get away with a slightly heavier bullet in the slightly longer case. The maximum weight I use in the 6.5x47 Lapua is the 130gr Berger VLD and only use AR2208 which is extremely accurate in many rifles of this calibre. The Reloader 15 is a very close second in accuracy. By accuracy I mean below 0.20 MOA.

AR2209 was the powder of choice for me when I had my .243 as well.

Shooting 80-95gr pills.
