brass for the 297/230 morris

does anyone know where to get brass for the 297/230 morris? it seems so obscure here, but there is quite alot of rifles chambered in it still. interesting tiny cartridge.
i was thinking you could use .22lr projectiles for reloading.. but with winchester nolonger making ammo here that might be hard.. but the brass seems quite a pest to make.. seems the only option at the moment is to make it from 22 hornet. which looks to be quite alot of work.

G'day justdave,
Everyone makes it out of the Hornet brass, it really isn't that hard to form. Pulled 22 RF are often undersized on the heel and can be loose in the case, not a real problem if you are careful to have them standing on the base in a box and thumb check before loading but the best results are to get a mould from CBE which will throw a .41g heeled bullet at .226 with soft lead, Cheers.

I doubt you'll find brass and have no idea about dies. I Googled and found this https://www.northernshooterssupplies.com.au/297-230-Morris-Long-3-Die-Set-p/230mds.htm and this https://tecmagex.com/en/reloading/metallic-cartridge-reloading/reloading-dies/obscure-dies-sets/ch4d-die-set-297-230-morris-short.html

At $300 a set I'd just make them myself. A .222Rem vice die, like this http://simplexreloading.com.au/4-photo-layout/super-simplex-press/ or a Lee Loader could be cut down to neck-size the brass. You'd want to hone it out slightly over-size.

Cut Hornet brass down to length, seat a bullet (or plug it with wax), and shoot it to fire-form it to the chamber. Then just neck-size.

If you weren't so far away I'd do it for you.

https://www.northernshooterssupplies.com.au/297-230-Morris-Long-Unprimed-Brass-Cases-p/2923b.htm
They have 120 pieces, for $600.

I've made a load of them using .22 hornet cases. You need access to a lathe as you need to thin the rim down. You'll find a case trimmer will be desirable also. The bullets would be best off casting yourself, from pure lead. The mould I use is a CBE unit, made expressly for that cartridge. It is a heeled bullet. There are some drawings kicking around showing no heel. Don't believe them - they are not technical drawings, merely instrumental sketches. I pulled 20 original cartridges apart, some short, most long, and every bullet was heeled. If you get that far, I found small pistol primers give the best accuracy (my Hornet has the same behaviour).

Sorry, I just reread and saw you don't have a lathe. Email me at lowcock@hotmail.com and we'll try to sort something out. These are fun to shoot, all the power of a .22LR LOL.

I have a rifle cal 297/230. You haven’t been able to buy brass or ready made bullets for this calibre for nearly 100 years. However I got a friend of mine to make some brass for these by necking down 22 hornet casing and cutting to length. They work well using a 22 bullet and small primer, etc, I cannot give you a load as the powder I used is now not manufactured. The rifle is what we called a Rook rifle or garden gun? Must have been made for the gentry. My gun was made by w Pape of Newcastle upon Tyne, and it has a octagonal barrel. I was told by a gunsmith to be very careful making loads as modern powders are so much more powerful. You have been warned, put it in vice and use a cord to fire a few, I know Aussies have balls but please don’t lose them. Good luck.
