Where to offload old brass?

Post by dpskipper » 14 Apr 2021, 11:56 pm

I've got 7 packets (140rnds) of mixed PPU and federal brass thats once fired out of my 308. I don't reload but also don't know what to do with the brass.. I would put it up on facebook but they don't allow anything guns related anymore.

Any pointers for what to do with the stuff? I just don't have the space for what are to me windchimes. Happy to sell it to someone here to put the proceeds towards another box of factory stuff.

G'day dpskipper,
You can advertise on SSAA classifieds if you are a member, or some forums have a trading page, then there are the commercial sales websites but that incurs costs. Ranges usually have a brass bucket you can drop them in next visit, or gunclub notice boards. Scrap metal merchants, although your small amount isn't worth the pittance they offer, or what you have just done and ask here if anyone wants some once fired brass. Last options is to simply bin them, which isn't illegal for us here in Vic but may be in other States, Cheers.

Mate you would more than likely be able to sell it, however I’d collect a few more so it’s more economical with the postage costs.

Perhaps chuck it in here for a start. If it’s the right price someone will want it if it is only once fired.

I kept all my brass in a big bag for years, eventually I got into reloading, I'm still using that same brass 20 years later and haven't bought a factory round for the. 223 or .243 for that whole time.

Perhaps it's worth hanging on to?

I just don't shoot enough. I have other hobbies that take up more space and time than guns, as shocking as that might be :D

Hang onto them mate. I bag mine in large ziplock bags.

Recently our local land council guys were doing range days and left hundreds of once-fired 308 shells behind in the brass bucket. They were gone very quickly, some members passing them on to others.

Once-fired is usually worth $25 / 100 posted to strangers, or a coffee/beer per hunge to a mate.

Reloading is deceptively simple. Grab a Lee hand loader (search "Lee 90180" on ebay) and a set of dippers (Lee 90100) and you're in business, plus dies for your calibre.

What about resizing the cartridge etc? I did some looking into reloading and it looks to me, a lot more complicated than just pouring powder into a case and squishing down a bullet.

It's all fairly straightforward. If you can make a sandwich you can make a round of ammunition.

This is a simple Lee hand press. Small, relatively inexpensive, very straightforward.

I found 8 packets of Unfired 762 by 39 factory ammo locked in The back of my ammo cUpboard .....I no longer have a rifle in that calibre. So I advertised free ammo On a hunting shooting forum to anyone licenced as long as u drive to me to pick it up. That worked . Do something nice for someone you have never met .... The world needs more of it

I'm aware the end process of making the bullet is that easy. but its the steps before hand that just seem so tedious and costly. Theres the chamferring and deburring tools. primer pocket cleaners. brass cleaners. case lube. resizing dies, crimping dies, power measuring tools, etc etc etc.

Lot of investment for a shooter with countless other hobbies further up the list of importance

Ok, yes you can do a lot of tedious case prep. Or you can skip most of it because it only provides a small benefit.

You don't have to clean cases, it mainly just looks perrty.
Unless you trim, there is no need to de-burr.
You only need to trim every 3 on 4 firings as a general rule.
If you neck size trim even less.
Clean primer pockets only every few
fireings.
Primer pockets can be cleaned with a small screw driver.
A sharp pocket knife will bevel the inside of a case neck. A fine file for out side.

But to trim you need a trimmer.

You can make it as simple or as complicated as you like.

Just leave them at the range next time you go, or throw them in the bin. You’re talking yourself out of it and you have too many other hobbies.

If anyone wants them, you know what do to.

Otherwise they are going in the bin, I don't go to the range.

If I get scrap brass or copper from building site Reno’s I stash it till it adds up to a reasonable amount then when I happen to be driving real close to a scrap yard on my way to some other random destination I call in briefly to the scrap yard and swap it for bucks
