Adjusting powder for different barrel length?

Post by Paul » 04 Jun 2021, 8:27 pm

So looking at the ADI (and many other loading data tables) the 'test' rifle that the data are given for is 24". If my barrel is 22" (Tikka T3x) then should I consider that the given velocities for my shorter barrel will be slower?

In which case should I go for the 'faster' 2206H over 2208 so that I get the velocity I want without having to load it up too much?

This is based on the Sierra information for 45gr Sierra Spitzer being most accurate with a 2208 equivalent powder getting 3600fps.

Hope that makes sense.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul,
Here is a link to some info.

https://www.rifleshootermag.com/editori ... nce/385361

But in very general terms you loose about 25fps per inch.

If your loading for hunting i would just load for best accuracy and forget about losing 50fps. The foxes and goats will never notice the difference. And I doubt they will object in triplicate.

All else being equal then it is likely that your velocity will be slower.
But not enough to matter.
See what shoots straightest and use that regardless if it is a little faster or slower.
P.S. Just coz the book says 2208 is most accurate does not make it so.
Ony trial and error will tell.
One well placed shot is all it takes.
