204 Ruger Projectiles

Post by madang55 » 25 Jun 2021, 2:22 pm

Have finally got my baby back. Had an 700Rem action barreled to 204R. Took it to the range with some Win factory 32gr, just to put some rounds through, and I have a laser. it was consistent at 1 inch at 100 with the factory ammo. Ok, so I loaded up some 32G Vmax, some 40G Vmax and some 39G TNT. It likes them all. What I didn't have was some Nosler Bal Tips to try.Question. Is it worth giving the Noslers a go? Are they any better than the Hornady? I'm told they are have better consistency. The Nosler are a bit more expensive, but we all like to feed our children the best.
All photos are 3 shot groups at 100m. 25mm circle.

What are you using it for? Comp? Paper punching? Bragging rights? Hunting? The Nosler pills are mostly just a little more consistent. They are more a match pill, where sample sizes are much larger, and consistency becomes important for aggregation. Just a thought, what if you weight AND length batched your Hornady pills? (measure off the ogive).
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?

If you want to smack medium-sized animals as in small pigs kangaroos goats nosler is a far superior pill because of the solid base you get the explosive projectile the solid base keeps punching through making a deeper wound channel .

I found I get excellent accuracy from 39 grain Sierra Blitzkings shooting groups in the 0.2s out of a factory hunting rifle. I also have used 39 grain Speed TNT which have not been quite as good but still excellent shooting 0.3s at times. Both have been dynamite on foxes at ranges up to 300 metres.

40gr Nosler BT shoot 0.5moa with my 20Hornet, 40gr Berger's HP shoot a smidge tighter but I need to do a bit more tuning

Ah, holes in paper, bragging rights, all of the above. But end result is a very accurate, very functional, extremely effective, culling tool. I want to stay away from the 39g proj, as they don't meet the kangaroo requirements. I won't need to go to the weighing and measuring extreme, just want to consider them all so I can settle on the best "meets all requirements" projectile and buy in bulk. I think the comment re penetration etc due to solid base says it best. Same comment came from a retailer as well. I don't have a problem with the Hornady VMax, my 223 loves em, 55gr and 53gr, same hole. Its just the possibility in the 204R, that the Nosler might have the edge over them. We shall see. By the way, I nearly bought a pack of 250 40g Noslers from a Brisbane shop. But, I though to myself, that is an insane price, $104 for a 250 pack. So I checked , and no, nothing in stock. Next price for 250 was $144 (approx, I think) from a shop here in Melbourne. And I saw them on the shelf. Much closer to the truth.
Thanks peoples,
Have a good weekend

Why don't 39 grain projectiles meet kangaroo requirements? Are they too devestating?

Pity the Blitzkings miss out by one grain. They are the most excellent hunting bullet for soft furry things.
