reduced .270 loads

Post by MtnMan » 27 Jun 2021, 10:36 pm

My lad is getting keen on shooting and I thought today that a reduced load in my .270 would be good for when he gets big enough to start shooting it.

any details on some youth loads?
I have plenty of AR2209 and 130gr Hornady interlocks but is there better choices in powder and bullets for youth loads for hunting pigs, goats, deer inside 200m?

performance drops off fast and case pressures build up fast, seen a few guys do it but wouldn't bother, better to load it with lighter projies and have a flatter laser beam to shoot, will reduce recoil faster than dropping fps.

cheers.

Mtnman,
I see your in QLD. So sambar will not be on the agenda.
No experience with Reds but I'm guessing 130gr doing about 2600 would do the job out to 150 mtrs.

I have some old youth load data. I'll post it tomorrow sometime if I can dig it up.

First few trailboss to acclimatize.

Next go the youth loads as provided.

I tend to do similar with visitors to the 45-70. Trailboss, then moderate load, stouter only if they are still keen.

You can try this. Cropped from ADI load manual.

ADI 60% 2206H Reduced loads.JPG
ADI 60% 2206H Reduced loads.JPG (72.59 KiB) Viewed 2471 times

So you can go as low as
.60x45=27gr or as high as 45gr using AR2206H with 130gr sp

IMO 38 to 39gr could be the go.

In addition to above you can reduce any ADI powder to make a reduced load. Again from ADI manual.

75% case capacity. Case capacity I believe is measured at the base of the neck. Suggest you email/ask ADI to confirm this. I would be interested in their response.

awesome info Oldbloke!
I was about to ask if AR2206H was a direct replacement for H4895 as I have read the 60% thing with H4895.

I'm on the hunt another powder for my .222Rem as well since Win748 is no longer available.
AR2206H may well be just the thing to use in both the .222rem and the .270 for youth loads.

Yep, AR2206H is listed for both 222 and 270. So, saves any possible confusion and no wastage.

I'm loading both 223 and 30.06 with AR2208.

Both are remarkably versatile powders. In some cases you may lose say 80fps, but i doubt the foxes will notice.

great.

now bullet choice. what's out there in the 90-115gr range that will be suitable for deer, goats, pigs? I've used 90gr Speer TNT before but I wouldn't consider it for more than headshots on those game species listed.
choice seems limited after a quick look around.

Hornady make 115 grain, 110 grain projies in .277, and they have decent BC considering short and light.

Google “lever performance studies GMDR “ Nothing in there for 270 but plenty other reduced loads for at least a dozen different cals .......it’s like a bible but a lot easier to read and much more useful

How old is he?
Why not the 130gr interlocks?
A 130gr doing about 2500fps will be very mild.

yes I could try some reduced loads with the interlocks. I just found the 110gr sierra soft point #1810. cheap enough and should perform ok on medium game at moderate velocity. they will be worth a go.

But he wants them for deer in QLD Pete.

A 130gr at 1537fps for 19.7gr of trailboss. (listed max in their manual) I'm not sure it will cut it for red deer. Fallow, perhaps.

They have been dropped with less....but yes,a bit anaemic. I'd nearly bet you can get more in though. 45-70 max is about 4gn lower than what you can get in the case...

i agree OB . i don't think it would have enough energy left once this load got out there . i reckon at a minimum you'd want a 130 gn to be doing at least 2500-2750 , which at a guess would be on par with 6.5x55 swede mauser 130gn factory loads . bin a lot of deer killed with them . JMHO

i know it's probably not what the OP had in mind, but maybe buy or loan a 243 for the young fella . just a thought :drinks:
