Alliant powder for 38 super

Post by Danny » 27 Aug 2021, 6:06 pm

With the exit of adi from the pistol powder and being down to my last 3kg of ap 100 I am looking for the alliant alternatives. Based on their load data it looks like herco or blue dot will be the go but I was wondering if anyone here is using alliant powders in their 38 super major loads and could point me in the right direction. Shooting 124gr Rn and wanting plenty of gas to work the comp

Q-Store at Belmont has a few 500g bottles of 2205 left, ADI claim they have enough in stock until they make another batch but nobody else in SE QLD seems to have any.

It's a little slower than AP100 but might be close enough. I've used it successfully in 9mm with a full case of around 8.5gn and a heavier 147gn projectile and it cycles the action nicely, the extra space in a 38 Super case might just be enough to meet major power factor but you may have to go heavier than 124gn.

Aliant pistol powders are all gone from stores and the next import will likely all go to existing back orders, ADI pistol powders are gone for the 'forseable future' which could mean several years. It's not a good time for high volume pistol reloaders, when they do return there will likely be a crazy price increase.

I have some 2205 I can try in it at the moment. More wanting to put in an order early for the alliant stuff so that it's in by the time I run out of ap100

I'd say Blue dot or Unique, I'm going to be stocking up on Unique as soon as I lay eyes on a tub. I really hope Vihtavuori start importing, N330 was excellent.

If N330 was good then there are a few powders in the Alliant Herco - Unique range, I suspect either of those would suit your needs, Herco is a fraction slower that Unique and I have a suspicion that they test the batch when it's made, check the burn rate and then decide how to size the flakes and which labels to put on the bottles.

I've found Herco to be an exceptional powder for high power from 9mm, from the Hodgdon chart below it appears to be the closest to N330, unfortunately they don't include ADI powders.

I'm going to be saving my AP70 and using it sparingly, I've been experimenting with Trailboss, it's been surprisingly good in 44 magnum and 357 magnum.

Blue dot was my pick from the data although herco does look good too. Viht 3n38 was the best for super but was definately up there in pricing

Ditto.

Second for Blue Dot, Unique, Herco and 2400.

Unique is roughly the same as Ap70, Herco a stage slower than 70 and two faster than AP100, Blue Dot a two slower than Ap100 and 2400 a stage faster than 2205.

Ap100 all gone. Have AP50N, Ar2208, Ar2205 are any of these suitable for 38 Supercomp
Using Federal small rifle match primers do I need to change primers

G'day Danny,
If you want Major from Alliant, use Power Pistol. I get 1430fps with 7.8g, give PF of 180. This load is within SAAMI for the 38 Super and doesn't need ramped barrels. I can't find Alliant anywhere in Vic, and don't need Major anymore anyway so I will use whatever I can get my hands on, or just shoot factory, I still have 600 round of 124g Armscor IPSC which shoots only a little off Major (PF 168) so I will use that if I can't get pistol powder to reload, Cheers.

AR2208 is a slow powder for rifles, no use in any common pistol caliber. Might be worth trying in a large capacity case like a 44 Magnum with a heavy projectile and long barrel but I doubt it would be usable even then.

AR2205 is good in 357 Magnum and 38 Special and just usable with 8.5gn compressed into a 9mm with a 147gn projectile but is slow so has a lot of drop by 50m. For 38 Supercomp, again you'd need a heavy projectile but you should be able to get enough powder in to make it usable. It's a slow powder so small pistol magnum (or small rifle) primers would be best.

AP50N is a fast pistol powder, reportedly equivalent to APS450 and somewhere between Unique and Green Dot on the Alliant scale, it should make some nice 38 Super loads and load data should be available.

AP50N is your best choice of those. AR2205 will work but probably not very well, it may not cycle a semi-auto pistol. AR2208 will spit the bullet out the muzzle but it won't burn fast enough to get much velocity.

I love Power Pistol for my hot loads in 9mm so I'm guessing that would work pretty good for 38 Super.

It's on the shelves here in the USA so it's just a matter of someone in Australia going to the trouble to import a batch.
