reloading 30-06

Hi all
I want to reload for my 30-06. 1-11 twist
I was thinking of 165gr (Partitions)
AR2209.

My 223 used 55gr V-max
My walk about 308 used 135gr
My heavier 308 uses 160gr interlocks
My 300WM uses180gr interlock

The gun will be used for general hunting in NSW, so that excludes Buffalo and T-Rex

What say you

In my 06 I used 55.5g of 09 for just on 2800fps but that was a cup and core pill so this might be a bit warm .

Just keep adding powder until it blows the bolt out of your action and then back it off 1\2 a grain.
Is that what you were after?

G'day Bello you were asking for loads for 165 grain that is what it was a Hornady SST .
7 Sambar 2 fellow and heaps of Roos under permit. It is not the best bullet for sambar it's a bit fragile these were neck and head shots something tougher would be better like a speer hot core .

seems very off to me, 30-06 running 130gn getting under 3000fps, nah... not at 49gn of 08, my 270 runs 3150 on the chrono with 130gn at 45gn at 300m above sea level. seems off to me.

He said they're mild loads and the velocities are just estimates...

My velocities are just based on the ADI manual less a tad due to 22" barrels. Like I stated very clearly estimates

I loaded the Hornady 178 eld-X in my brother’s Tikka Lite (22 inch barrel) worked up to max reloading charge for ar2209 and was getting the stated book velocity.

too slow. especially at that powder charge, I mean if it was 09 at 49gn I'd think that slow would be granted, but at 49gn of 08, I would expect at least something like 3050 at the muzzle, but looking at ADI load data table for my setup shows their velocities down from what I get, they cite 2960 ish but I am getting about 190 fps more than that on multiple chronos. I dont know their criteria but my rifles are all 22" so I would guess more might even be achievable.

My barrels are 22", so, I knock off a bit.

Frankly I don't care if it's 100fps out either way. If I do my bit they seem to fall over without questioning how fast the bullet was going.

There are many variables in reloading, I don’t take anything to be gospel from the load manuals. Two different projectiles of the same weight can give different results depending on shape, bearing surface, ect .
I’ve crono’ed loads in the past, that have come up around the manual listed speeds. These days I work up loads and normally find a accuracy node a grain or so under listed max and just run with that.

I’ve never had a goat or a pig sit up and tell my my projectiles are travelling too slow

I have a box or two of the Hornady 178gr ELD-X, has your brother used them on anything, if so what results did he get.
I am trying to decide on a projectile for my 30-06, I was leaning towards the 165 partition but I am listening for ideas and experiences other have had with their projectiles.
I have sierra Gamechanger projectile, hornady SST etc, sitting on my shelf.

Yeah I only load my varmint rounds as fast as I can, the other stuff is running heavier projies than average for more punch. but when it comes to varmint shooting, I really cant be arsed with holdover.

Yeah, makes sense. Less holdover is a good thing for varmiting. Projectile speed can have a effect on terminal performance as well. I try to pay close attention to what make and design of projectiles for the job at hand

Agreed, I find the ADI velocities are in the right ballpark usually.

depends on elevation, humidity and a countless many other variables right down to the brand of chrono the use or if they just take a known value and use that to calculate their velocities. `

I wasn't sure what projectile to use. I didn't want to go too light or too heavy.
I have other caibres for light and heavy work.

Mainly looking for what projectile you are loading. Have you had success with this projectile.

I have some 165gr partition (What I am leaning towards) I think they will fit the bill for what I want to do. Also have
165gr Game changer,
178ELD-X,
etc etc

Mate, as a all rounder, I’d try heavy SST’s . They expand well at all range, but can be explosive at close range. Price per hundred is good too
