ANY GOOD- Super simplex reloading press

Post by Nath__111 » 08 Dec 2021, 7:35 pm

Hi all,
I am just starting out on the reloading side of things and have never done any reloading before ( I know I have a lot to learn :D :D ).The caliber to be reloaded is .243 Winchester, that is the only caliber I will be reloading at the moment and will always keep that caliber even if I upgrade in the future. I have just been given a super simplex 6 die reloading turret press and for an old girl it is in excellent condition, no play or excess movement in any of the moving parts. I will be reloading about 100-150 rounds every 3-4 months . My question is, the press uses the smaller 5/8 dies and therefore you can’t do any full length resizing. Will this be an issue for me as I don’t shoot a lot and want consistency with my rounds. I just don’t want to buy the dies and then have to get another press and the dies won’t fit ( and have to purchase dies again ). I have seen that they sell a vice type resizing die and was wondering if anyone has used one of these and if it will be ok for me if I need to full length resize as I’m not doing a lot of rounds and don’t mind if it takes a while. Any input on this will be greatly appreciated. Cheers :D :D

But, just for FLR you can get one of these.
Believe it or not they will do the job for 243,308 size cases. Cheap and cheerful.

No, wait 30.06 cases can be FLRS in them. :D

No, wait, you can prime cases in them too. :)

When I started I used the Lee Loader and I used a Wilson FLS die in a vice.
Simplex offer the same die.

I have used a Super Simplex for over 40 years and never bothered to FL resize. Never had a problem. But I do replace the brass after about 10 reloads. With nearly 1000 loads in the cupboard, it takes a while to go through that ten times.

I have the more modern simplex turret press 6 die locations. But it weighs a ton. I wanted a lightweight one to take on a hunting trip to the cape so I bought the one old bloke suggested. Nothing wrong with it. Miles in front of any sort of non bench mounted hand press .... I think useing an non bench mounted old hand press would be like grinding grains of wheat between two stones to make your own bread

G'day Nath_111,
The vice die will work fine, you should only have to full length size every 3 to 5 loadings with brass from your own rifle. If you really wanted to incorporate a press mounted die you have 6 stations, go to a machine shop and have 1 station bored out and threaded to take 7/8th dies. Alternatively sell the Simplex and buy the Lee single stage then all your problems are solved, Cheers.

Is there enough "meat" there to do that? Doesn't look it.

In any case a few option there.

G'day Oldbloke,
It can be sleeved to suit, I have done this sort of thing before when I was still working as a Fitter/Turner, Cheers.

It was just a question. Certainly take your word for it. A very good option.

Hey guys, some great answers there.
I think I’ll stick with the press as I don’t do that many loads as to worry about the FLR part yet. I may sell the press down the track and upgrade if the vice die for FLR ( when needed ) gives me the sh***. Thanks heaps guys greatly appreciate all the help.
