500 A-Square help

Post by tomma89 » 25 Jan 2022, 7:47 am

Good morning all. Long time lurker here.

I've got myself a silly little impulse purchase and need some advise on my brass. The 500 AS is necked up 460 weatherby Mag to .510 . My rifle ruger No1 with MAB (now TSE) barrel.

The brass that came with the rifle is Norma 460wbymag, I have since purchased brass new from Bertram. Here lies first question:

1.The shoulder position is rather different will this need to be addressed?
2. Is it necessary to crimp the necks.
3. Any recommended loads (I'm working on winchester/mag primer /100gr 09 pushing a 570gr Bertram Proj)

Cheers,
Tomma

The 460 Weatherby brass looks to have not been formed in your rifle, you can fireform either with a moderate load of fast powder with a cork/paper plug or a light load with projectile. Their are some who prefer to load a standard load to fireform. As you have a single shot, I can see no real reason to crimp if the case mouth friction holds the bullet securely. I don't load this cartridge, so can't help with info, Cheers.

Welcome to the 50 cal club tomma89 :drinks:

you shouldnt need to crimp but it wouldnt hurt either as its alot of bullet weight.

The cases will need to be trimmed, you can go pretty light just as long as you use a good filler like dacron ( spotlight sells it for cushion ), the previous owner of my rifle had loads of 85gr and 95gr of 2206 behind 570gr cast projectiles which were used for plinking

These 570gr have 105gr of 2206 behind em, they chrono at 2050ps (5300ft lbs). You can load up to 130gr of 2209 according to Quickload. This will push the 570gr at around 2550fps with 8189ft lbs of energy

As said above
Your cases need to be fireformed.
It looks like your 460 cases have been taken out to 510 but not fireformed to blow out the case if needed and establish the new shoulder.
This won't be an issue as the 500 headspaces on the belt not the shoulder as rimless rifle cases do.
As already said there is no real need to crimp but crimping may affect accuracy with some loads. Certainly not needed for fireforming.
I would suggest a minimum load at rocks. Great fun to be had!
I shoot a 500 Jeffery, which is a hoot, and would love to know how you go accuracy wise.
If you wanna swap some 440 grain Bertram SPRN pills for 600 grainers let me know.
As far as loads go I would suggest you look at Hogdons website and check the ADI equivalents.
Remember a too light load can be more dangerous than a too heavy one so fireform with the minimum load or TB.

Here is what the A-Square manual shows for those three powders. I don't have any info for IMR-4198.

600 gr. A-Square Dead Tough bullet
26" barrel
Maximum Average Piezo PSI: 63,860

H-4895 106.0 gr. 2346 fps 55,300 psi Average
H-4895 115.0 gr. 2474 fps 61,600 psi Average

IMR-4064 112.0 gr. 2380 fps 52,000 psi Average
IMR-4064 117.0 gr. 2503 fps 61,300 psi Average

IMR-4320 110.0 gr. 2382 fps 59,100 psi Average
IMR-4320 115.0 gr. 2465 fps 65,700 psi Average, load exceeds max avg psi

Hope that helps and gives you a place to start with those powders.

Have fun

Thanks for the responses guys! I'm going to have a crack at the 'ballistic porridge method' of fire forming. 10 grains of shot gun powder, tissues paper and rolled oats packed to just bellow the shoulder. Sure to turn some heads at the range but far cheaper than full house loads. I look forward to updating you all.

Hey Bill, what case length do you work to?
