Powder thrower

Post by northdude » 23 Jun 2022, 4:52 am

Hi there. What do you guys find is a good powder thrower for ball powder? Ive got a cheap lee perfect powder thrower, it works perfectly fine with the stick type powders but being made of plastic and the desighn of it the ball powder works its way around the drum and it sharts feeling gritty and powder leaks out the side of the drum after a while.

I am still using an old Hornady, cast iron, powder thrower and it handles ball powders perfectly. No idea of the model but at least 40 years.

I also use a 40yo cast one of orange colour. Works fine with ball powder

I use a Lee Auto Disc on the progressive presses, I do find ball and flake can spill a little requiring cleanng every few hundred rounds, so for most ball applications I use and RCBS drum measure or the Lyman 55 BP measure. The Lyman is relatively low cost, and the BP measure will run both Black and Smokeless, Cheers.

When my old cheap Le gets a bit clogged a cleanout usually sorts it but I can see why a lot of ball powder use would be frustrating

With plastic measure run a cup full of graphite through it before use and they work better with less static . make sure it's all out before adding gun powder .
A slight coating of graphite is fine and what's needed and won't affect the powder .
