Can I use my 45-70 factory crimp die for 458wm?

Post by Kelsey Cooter » 29 Jun 2022, 7:15 pm

If I don't ask I'll keep wondering.

I've just paid for a 458win mag, so currently looking at dies.

Looking at the shape of my Lee 45-70 factory crimp die I'm thinking it won't try to squeeze the 458 brass below the projectile and it looks like the die won't get down to the belt so is there any reason I can't use the 45-70 Lee crimp die for 458wm?

Yes,you just need to make a collar to make up for the difference in case lengths

Can he just not screw the body of the die too far down into the press ? Just as I would do using my lee fac crimp die on sometimes 38 and sometimes 357 mag cases

No,there's not enough adjustment. I've actually done this before

Cheers big pete, I was thinking the same way BLR was. Turning up a collar sounds like an easy option since I don't expect I'll be wanting to shoot a few hundred 458wm's a month ;)

Yeah, except that won't work with a lee factory crimp die as it requires the shell base to push up the cylinder to crimp the case mouth....

Well bugger me u learn something every day. All this time I been crimping my. 4570 and really enjoy doing it. I don’t really like reloading I just do it on certain cals because I have to financially... for some reason crimping 4570 with My lee FCD really does it for me .. I had no idea that the crimping came from pushing the base of the die up. I thought it was just the pressure from the downstroke of the handle
