Woodleigh 220gr loads for .308

Post by Billywillinga » 07 Jul 2022, 5:26 pm

I've got hold of some Woodleigh .308 220 gr RN SPs. I suspect they are intended for use in 30/06, but I thought I might load some up in .308 as 100-150 m thumpers for big pigs, occasional red deer. I have a Tikka T3 with a 1:11 twist and a Bergara BA 13 with a 1:12. The Bergara loves 200 gr Sako Hammerheads (sub MoA), so hopeful that the Tikka will give reasonable accuracy at shortish range with the 220s. Can anyone suggest a starting load. I mainly load with 2206H and 2209. Thanks in advance

Apparently not. I'd probably start 2 grains lower than the starting load for the 208gn a max

Thanks Bigpete, Working from the ADI 208 gr load might be the go. The manual has a 208gr load using 2206H.

If you are loading for a standard COL I would suggest 38gn of 2206H or 40gn 2208 as starting loads. Hotter loads should be possible but will depend on how much freebore you have.

Thanks Straight shooter,
apparently there is a 2208 load which a mate of mine thinks he has somewhere. I may have to bite the bullet and buy some 2208, although I'm still convinced 2206H would work well

It will, but not if you load a near maximum charge for a 12gn lighter projectile under your 220gn pills lol

As this data out of my Burger loading manual shows for 210 and 230 grain and you will be in the middle of that the 06h (H4895) will work fine albeit a slight drop in feet per second I don't think an animal would tell the difference .

Thanks for everyone's comment, really appreciate it. Apparently Sierra has a 4350 (2209) load for the 220 gr Pro Hunter projectile. I might try and source that.

I would prefer a bigger case, lighter bullet or a slower powder in reference to a 220 grain bullet in a 308 case using 2206H.

220 grain bullet is too much for a .308W case . You will get flatter trajectory and higher velocities with a 144 to 150 grain bullet . Those very long ogive match bullets can be unreliable on bone as the fine meplat makes the ogive weak .

Always wanted to try some of the 220 woodleighs in the day. Anyone know if they ever recovered from the fire?

This doesn't apply to 220gr Woodleigh bullets

Yes but the weight is still a bit too much for the 308 case capacity it's no great advantage .

There is no advantage at all in a 308 lighter bullets go faster and give better results in all categories.

On the african rifle scene fellas more run heavy bullets like that. Off the numbers 308 should still get 2200-2300fps so similar to fellas using 6.5 with the old 169 grain bullets or 333 jeffery with 300 grains. Not my cup of tea but some blokes love it.

I know the 220gr projectiles are a bit marginal for
308 Win. I have some and just thought I would have some fun.

As an aside, I shoot 200gr Sako.Hammerheads exclusively in my .308 Bergara with a 1:12 twist. Consistent sub MoA and deadly on deer out to 150 m or so. Looking forward to trying the Woodleighs
