223 Reduced loads AR2206H

Post by jpsauer88 » 26 Jul 2022, 8:53 pm

I will be creating a ladder load to test accuracy at 50m for reduced H4895 (AR2206H) loads with a 55g Nosler Varm HP.

Brass: ADI
Primer: Fiocchi SR
Projectile: Nosler Varm 55g HP
Powder: H4895 (AR2206H)
Load Max: 26g
Loads will be from 60% in 5% increments, 4 shot groups to 95%.
Barrel will be allowed to cool between shots.

I will also test 2 groups of 70% and 80% with Winchester SR Primers to see if there is a difference.

Posting results this week (hopefully).

Rifle used:
Howa 223 20" Varmint.
Off rests front and back to minimise shooter error.

Range is indoor so wind is no issue.

Just hoping some data would be interesting to someone else. Do not replicate without consulting a reloading manual, load at your own risk.

AR2207 can also work well in this application, particularly considering you are running only a 55gr

You should look up Bladeracers old threads about reduced loads. He has done a lot of experiments in this space.

I played with reduced loads with AR2206H in .222rem to get down to .22mag velocity. The trouble is finding a bullet that will expand at those lower velocities without being an expensive premium bullet which defeated the purpose of duplicating .22mag cost wise.

Found a cheap 40gr bullet, drove it to 2500fps and knocked the soft point off and created a small hollow point and now it expands enough but not explosively by any means. Pass through on a fox at 60m with exit hole size of 5¢ coin. Nice mild load out of a better gun to shoot and more accurate.

Interesting comment Mtnman

Mmm,, Im loading Hornady 55 gn SP - BC .235 #2265 doing about 2100fps in my 223. The 3 foxes I've shot with them dropped like a stone. All chest shots. All under 80 yards I'd say.

Yes just like shooting a fox at around 220 yards with a standard 223 never a problem.
my 55 grain load hits 2098 feet per second at 250 yards but as you said 80 yards and Less.

Thank you for the comments. The varmint style quick expansion should expand the jacket is pretty thin but il have to see

I was just stunned by the accuracy i got from downloading my 6.5CM and 308

Ridiculous 0.2" basically a ragged hole. Was wondering if 223 did the same. I have covid now but will try it out and report back when I'm better

It's tradeoffs - what may shoot a stunning 100m group, once you stretch her out under a fishy wind, you're groups will in fact be worse, because of the longer time of flight. Just depends on your application.
