Does one need to seat and crimp to the cannelure, or....can one seat to whatever depth and ignore the cannelure

Whatever depth, I have only one firearm that seats at the cannelure. However if you want a tight crimp for hunting with high recoil rifles, or with tube mag rifles as in Marlin 336, you need a crimp with a Lee style crimp die.
Google is your friend for more info on the Lee crimp.

No, if you're not crimping then it makes no difference anyway.
If you are crimping you don't have to crimp to the cannelure.

If possible, don't crimp, for most applications it is not necessary. It is terrible for neck tension and accuracy.

Thankyou, that fixes that problem. I'm visiting Adelaide and found some 6.5 SST 129gr which I might try now. Even found large pistol primers
