Sierra .224 62gr SBT performance

Post by rossfrb » 15 Oct 2022, 11:35 am

Hi all
Choppers in QLD have these on special ATM and I know virtually nothing about them but by the numbers they seem to have a bit better specs than their 55gr SBT. For the price they could be the poor man's 65 gr Gameking substitute.
62 gr
Sectional Density 0.177
Ballistic Coefficients and Velocity Ranges
.298 @ 2750 fps and above .292 between 1800 and 2750 fps .287 @ 1800 fps and below.

55gr
Sectional Density 0.157
Ballistic Coefficients and Velocity Ranges
.250 @ 3000 fps and above .245 between 3000 and 2000 fps .235 @ 2000 fps and below.

65 gr
Sectional Density 0.185

Any one used them on smaller porky things or goats or foxes?
To be used in a 1:9 twisty 223 Rem @~100m.

G'day ross

Mate that shop has a reputation for advertising stuff as being "in stock" or "while stocks last" and when you call them they don't have it "but it's coming".

I'm not affiliated in any way with REXEM in Brisbane but recently did some testing of their 62gn F-Bombs.
They hit like a 155mm artillery round.

There's a video on their facebook page dated 6th of September showing thermal footage of the performance of their projectiles in action.

Look for a video with this picture as the title:

Courage is knowing it might
hurt, and doing it anyway.
Stupidity is the same
.
And that's why life is hard

The 62 grain Sierra are 25c each compared to 19c for the 55 grain roo max or whatever they call it. Also the Hornady Varmint 55 grain is 16.5c each. The 55 grain bullets I have used on a ton of foxes and some goats. Works every time.

Well going on your statistics must be using it in a 222r not a 223r with a 62g grain bullet I don't see why you would not get 3000 to 3100 fps for a 62 grain projectile in a 223r just work you loads up carefully and don't look back .
A 55 grain bullet can do a reasonably good job a 62 grain bullet will do it even better if loaded correctly if you have the twist to piff it ..
