Sierra 55gr HPBT 223 rem load data

Post by Jb7734 » 28 Nov 2022, 4:34 pm

Hi guys. I'm new to reloading and I'm having a bit of trouble finding some information. I can't find load data for the Sierra 55gr HPBT. I just want to know a safe starting charge and the max reccomended charge. They're for a Howa 1500 (unsure of barrel length). I'll be using ADI brass, CCI 400 small rifle primers and AR2206H powder. Thanks in advance for any information.

Load data is based on bullet weight, all load data for 55g is safe under all circumstances regardless of bullet maker, base configuratipn, tip design etc. etc.

Awesome thank you. I had assumed that but I just want to check first.

Just for your information, ADI Max is 26.0g for 55g with 2206H, my personal load is 25.5g of 2206H for an average of 3230fps from my Howa 1500 with a 1:12 twist in a Bell & Carlson stock giving good groups at 500m (a bit under 2moa, which is good for me) which means a dead fox at any range under that! (when I was still able to hunt!!)

Just a little information the above advice is good if using a Remington 71/2 or a cci 450 primer just do not go anywhere near maximum loads with your cci 400 it is a low-pressure primer cup if you do you will experience severe primer cratering even though the edges are still heavily radiused 450 and 71/2 Remington primers have a cup 0.005 thicker while this is very well known in the US not so well known here in Australia and yes I learnt the hard way.

I've loaded 40 rounds so far. 10 at 23.8gr, 10 at 24gr, 10 at 24.2gr and 10 at 24.5gr. Would you say that the 24.2 and 24.5 are too much? I do have a bullet puller so I can deconstruct them and start again if needed.

Not with 2206H you should be fine as you'd be battling to get enough in the case to cause a problem for future reference benchmark2 8208 you can definitely run into problems with a 55 grain pill as it's a faster burning powder .

Don't load up too many rounds at a particular weight of powder while experimenting . 3 to five shots is enough at a particular charge weight to get a feel for the potential accuracy . Then zero in on the best group and tweak that further staying within sensible pressure limits . No one can judge how your gun and load combination will handle pressures . There is many variables in how loose or tight the specs are in any particular gun and one gun can handle more powder than another . Once you decide to do hand loading it is wise to study up on the ways to judge a safe working load from a high pressure one that may cause problems . Accuracy is far more useful than velocity . I would rather hit them in the brain with 2900 fps than miss with 3200 fps . So look for the most accurate groups at moderate pressures .
