Definitely not a fan of ADI new recipe

Post by deye243 » 19 Jan 2023, 9:21 pm

Well it has taken several years for me as I'm usually always stocked up on everything but I have finally ran out of my old stock of ar2208 .
I heard that several years ago they change their recipe and boy oh boy have they ever.
With ADI powder and my long-range rifles as I only clean when I need to i used to be able to put them in the safe for months and not worry about having to clean them something in the old recipe kept moisture away don't know what it was this new stuff absolute bloody rubbish I am not impressed this is 2 days after using the new powder.

I noticed the change in the ar2209 but it was not this bad it even smells a lot different it has lost it's beautiful sweet ether smell it is now very acidic and hard on the nostrils especially when you open a new 4 kilo jugg.
Oh well just yet another reason to hate the French more than The Poms :sarcasm: possibly

Apart from those differences, how did the powder perform WRT the ballistic performance?

What is it that white stuff ? Looks like a chemical reaction has occurred.

What's the rifle and cartridge.

Well extreme spread has gone from around 19 ft per second to 37 ft per second but there is also the rise in muzzle velocity of 31 feet per second average for 10 rounds so the load will have to be tweaked which will possibly clean up the extreme spread grouping was not as good but conditions were not favourable for testing at 700 yards which is the distance I shot will have to wait for a windless evening which isn't too far away

That is the powder residue it used to be just a grey colour.

Funny, I have not noticed a big difference in the performance of 2208 or 2209, which I use a lot of. Aside from the usual batch variation that you always get, I have not had to make big changes in my loads. Find I need to tune more for the differance that barrel wear induces.

@Deye

Off topic I know, but I was wondering what twist rate you have on your Howa.

I have a 24" Howa varmint in 9 twist and was told by someone who "knows" that I wouldn't be able to stabilise pills over 70gn so I've not bothered to try.

They would be right there , it's not really bullet weight it's length so the vld type projectiles are quite long I use 80 grain Berger vld and 75 grain eld m as they are roughly the same length and very close point of impact even a fair way out and my twist is a 1 in 8 .

12" twist stabilises the 70gn Speer SP. Stability is about bullet length, not weight. In .224", 9"-twist will stabilise bullets up to around .975" in length. The Speer 70gn SP is only .808" in length, the 55gn Blitzking is .822".

If you're still not sure, Projectile Warehouse do sample packs so you can try a bullet before buying a full box.
