Compliant Powder Storage Boxes and Stickers

Post by NorthWester » 30 Jan 2023, 1:54 pm

Hi all,

Specifically for WA, does anyone know where you can buy a readymade wooden box (19mm thick) with the required stickers for compliant storage of smokeless powder?

Was about to make my own, but as is often the case by the time you get all the materials if might not work out much cheaper.

Also do any of the local gun shops sell the required explosives stickers?

If not, you would think that there would be a market for a handy carpenter to make and sell these locally.

Thanks

Not sure about the actual box mate, I’d be inclined to buy one of those plastic trunks from Bunnings or similar, that is unless the legislation stipulates wood, or you need something bigger. I store mine in my old Army trunk. As far as the required DG stickers go, I’d just print out my own, laminate them and stick them in the appropriate places as required by the law over there in the United Soviet Socialist Republic of Western Australia.

That's what I would do.
I'm surprised they are required. However, just search your worksafe site or google. You should find them there, or in their DGs code of practice.
Make sure you get the correct sub-class. I think ammo is 1.3. BP could be 1.1. It's on the packaging/containers. I'm doing my best to forget all that stuff. Lol

Funny you ask this. 2 weeks ago, i had a "moment" that said get your s**t together and comply.
I actually went and saw Mitch at South West Firearms, and he said a plastic lock box was all good for powder, so thats done. Nest, I sorted my ammo in a correctly bolted/fixed locked cabinet.
These stickers would be damn good.
I mentioned to the gun shop staff that Iwas amazed that someone hadn't ran with the idea of supplying this stuff all complied..

WA powder is controlled under Mining acts. Not to be found in workplace or firearms acts.

The actual legislation is "The Dangerous Goods (Explosives) Regulations 2007, authority to possess powder and make ammo are in Schedules 4 and 5, Storage is in Schedule 6 (5) and transport in Schedule 7 (5). Interesting for us Easterners to note is that WA has no limit on quantity of ammo that may be stored, only on explosives, being 15kg of propellant and 4kg of BP.

Faedy, you need to tell Mitch he seriously needs to get educated as he is totally wrong and he has sold you a pup that could have consequences.

Your powder has to be in either a specific type of wooden box etc with no less than 19mm thick panels or a steel box lined in wood. A plastic container will not cut it. Nothing to do with Police as it's a Mines Department requirement in recognising that firearm owners do reload ammunition and need access to gunpowder.

I have been known to be wrong but, it had always been my understanding that the container should be wood.
If stored in a "locked, steel container", you have a rudimentary bomb. A wooden case is more inclined to disintegrate into splinters, so relieving the pressure if the untoward were to happen.
Just sayin'.

It's a catch 22.
Wood is good from a safety perspective but poor for security.

Steel is good for security but poor from a safety perspective.

IMO wood lined steel box that is vented would likely be the best option. But there is likely other options.

Problem is legislators know SFA about the subject matter. And will not consult the experts.

FISH is an acronym for the key ways explosives are ignighted:

Friction
Impact
Spark
Heat

The above is what your trying to prevent but politicians and cops are only interested in security and votes.

Thanks everyone. Seems to me that there is a market for the local gun shops to get dedicated powder storage boxes in with appropriate labeling.

Exactly and some recent WA firearm legislation amendments have classic examples of numnuts who just don't analyse what they have written or just engage the brain with common sense.
