Yes and quite a lot of Americans are having trouble with progressive presses namely Lee and Hornady with feeding issues apparently some adjustments are needed and quite a few complaining about hard primer cups but then others say they don't have a problem it's mainly with striker type pistols

With zero primer supply I would expect to see lots of great specials on bullets that are no good to most people nowadays.

Yeh, seems to be mainly primers. Common powders are ok, but faster stuff and TB are as scarce as rocking horse sh1t.

I think your right. I'm lucky and have plenty for my needs. But might keep my eye open for any 30cal bullet bargains.

Glad I just read that because I did something stupid thing this week. It's called getting into reloading. Post COVID. .

Can do .223 which is tops. Heaps of places have the Super Roo 55gn 1000 packs for that price and I was wondering if that was new pricing or rip off. You can still get into reloading .223, plenty of CCI 400's everywhere.

Just can't find any large rifle primers in NSW to do my .308 with, and I'm only looking for around 200 given I want to make a 165gr hunting load. Hate to think what volume shooters are going to pay for in the end.

Yes, I've been thinking along those lines myself, and I have enough components to last my lifetime out.
Air guns just seem sensible, particularly if you're not velocity-happy anyway. I suspect it is going to require another learning curve. Been thinking of looking at .30-cal or bigger due to the lack of velocity. Hoping there might be some info at the deer expo.

I think .223 has been difficult for a while now, small rifle primers dried up long ago. Large rifle were fine until a few months ago, now there are none around at all.
Rebels have 500 small rifle primers in stock ($25/100!), no large rifle. They do have stock of the Argentinian pistol primers but I haven't seen those down here yet. Can you get .308Palma brass, or 6.5mm Creedmoor small primer brass and neck it up to .308Win maybe?

I have no memory of trying jacketed bullets in .22LR when I was a kid, it's certainly something I very likely would have done. But I have tried more recently, specifically trying to get a very worn .22LR barrel to group. It worked really well in that case, the rifle finally grouped, and very well. So I spent some weeks playing with them in a standard .22LR barrel. I had less success due to the hardness of the jackets requiring more force to engrave the rifling. I tried bullets in .222", .223" and .224" in the 30gn to 40gn range with the same results. They fired fine but the velocities were around half that of the original 40gn cast bullet - in the 500-600fps range. I tried increasing the powder charges but that just ruptured the cases without improving velocity. Nowadays I know people are shooting ELR using copper bullets with standard .22LR brass, bought new and salvaged from live ammo - nobody messes about trying to prime the things. I _think_ if you can start with a .224" barrel you'd have a better chance, but with an air-gun you have a hard velocity wall that you can't push through regardless of bullet type or mass. And of course, that velocity barrier is well short of the terminal velocities you need to get even the softest jacketed bullets to deform with any reliability for hunting. I've long wanted to make a chamber adaptor for .223Rem that would let me seat a charged .22LR case behind a jacketed bullet - but there is no value at the end of it. In the end, at the velocities and ranges air-guns are restricted to cast bullets work just fine.

When there are no primers or powders available at all then you might have to pay ridiculous prices to find some, like the $1000/kg we saw recently for powder and $500/1000 for LR primers advertised last week. At those prices it becomes smarter to buy factory ammo, while it's still available. It costs me a dollar a shot for .303 currently, with fifty-cent bullets and twelve loads per case (with PPU brass that cost $250/500). ADI rifle powders are still at $140/kg, Alliant are double that and lots of people prefer to use that. Even S&B brass that was for so long a buck a piece is up to $1.30 now. Buying stuff currently I think you'd struggle to load .303 for much under two bucks a shot, and with cheap commercial jacketed bullets closer to $2.50 apiece. The PPU 174gn FMJ factory ammo is available currently for under $40/20rds. It probably makes sense to shoot factory for now and hope primer supplies pick up within a year or two. They might discount the price if you ordered a thousand rounds perhaps. And you can pull some bullets and put your preferred hunting bullets in, or just file the points off, when you want to use them for that.

I'm not the only one currently leaning toward buying a mould and developing some decent cast bullet loads for shooting paper and steel rather than slinging expensive and hard to get jacketed bullets at the butts. Hardcast bullets (for melting into your desired moulds) are up into the $15-$18 per kilo range now, but that's still under twenty cents per 174gn bullet. On reduced loads to around 2000-2200fps, with greatly increased case life, it really drops the cost of shooting. Pressures might even be low enough to allow using pistol primers which are now available. But cast doesn't offer the accuracy, or maximum velocities, or terminal performance of jacketed bullets to suit everything.

I recover my .22LR bullets for casting but they're almost pure lead, very soft.
$750 for a case of CCI Standard Velocity last week - 15c per shot.
