They would have a Supply agreement with a manufacturer most likely likely in the EU. LOL no they dont have any spare.

I do know that Lithgow arms use to own a primer making machine, got sold off for scrap metal years ago

Reckon that would be right.
They scrapped the equipment a few years ago. Not sure how long ago.
Word is that at one point they were buying them from China.

This has been covered a few times

The idea that we are buying primers from China is deranged

Not a joke. I believe it's correct. Could have been a few years ago now.

Does my head in that the equipment went to scrap metal. Could have been mothballed instead.

It's an extraordinary claim and you can't expect anyone to believe it without anything more substantial than hearsay.

I thought I saw in some press release recently that the parent company of ADI said they were building a primer production capability in Australia so they would be self sufficient going forward.

Graeme Forbes of Forbes Wholesale, who were the long-time Oz RWS agents, tells the tale of ADI flying in shipments of primers from Germany, while he had ample stocks of cheaper seafreighted RWS primers on hand!

ADI/Thales have never locally produced Boxer primers AFAIK. The old Footscray factory only ever made Berdan primers - no anvil, and different cup diameters to standard Boxer types. They had plans at one time, to produce primers at ADI Benalla, but it seems that never went ahead.

A relevant anecdote; I applied for an Industrial Chemist job at ADI Benalla ~30 years back now , and synthesis of the active [explosive] components for primer filling was then part of that job description.

Got to the second [on site] interview stage, but was pipped by a local to me Research Lab chemist...
