308 win 200gr loads

Post by Billo » 13 Aug 2023, 2:23 pm

Always been a fan of heavy for calibre projectiles and I m currently using 185gr bullets out of my 308 and I started thinking about 200gr bullets as an all rounder for my stalking rifle.

Will be used on everything , anyone got a fav bullet or load ?

200gr on a 308 will have a rainbow like trajectory. If your ranges are close not an issue tho. Suggest you check it out.
Stick with what your doing if it works IMO.

Edit. 150 to 165gr is very popular.

Old bloke every goat, pig and deer I've shot in the last 10 years has been 150m or less, 1 exception was a 200m shot earlier this year.

Howa make the current Super lite with a 1:10 twist, is 25-2600fps really a rainbow ??

I'm guessing u have a 22 inch barrel. Sooo best you can expect is perhaps 2400fps. (More likely less)

Now, look at a couple of ballistic calculators you may get a surprise.

Here's one,

https://bergerbullets.com/ballistics-calculator/

But if as u say no more than about 150ysrds will be fine.

Nope, nothing wrong with the trajectory on those. Zero around 150m, should be about 50mm high at 80m and about 150mm low at 200m, depending on the bullet you use. A round nose would be more curved, an ELDX would be flatter.

Yeap 20" and 1:10 twist, thinking of putting on a Waters Gas monkey Muzzle brake to tame the recoil.

Yeah Bladeracer 150m zero is where its at, just noticed plenty of cheap 180/200gr 308 pills sitting unloved on gunshop shelves and the goal is to nail a few big boars and a red or 2 over the next 12 months. Might even throw it in the bag for an NT hunt in September :drinks:

Your closer than I was. I was expecting about 8" or 9" @ 200yards. Its just under 6". Assuming 2300FPS @ Muzzle.

I would take that .556 bc with a grain of salt and there is no way that is an average bc , as that bullet is very much like the 308 I make and mine only calculates at a G1 Bc of .41 . They are just quoting the highest single number in the string .

Yeah Johnv that BC does come across as a bit odd, anyway I doubt the bc factor will play much of role in the distances I'm hunting at.

Same here , it's a good close range hunting bullet and I doubt many would be using it at extended ranges anyway .
I am not a big fan of heavy bullets in the 308W case . I like 130 to 150 grain range for most Aussie game but If people find they like them then it's a personal choice .
