303 coated lead pills in 308 rifle

Post by Blr243 » 28 Oct 2023, 3:12 pm

Mild loads. Trsilboss or 2206 h. I’m thinking. The rifle will probably b a bolt action howa . The lead is powder coated cast Hawkesbury river cast. Will this slippery little lead be safe to shoot in my 308 ? Or whennchambering is it likely to get stuck in the bore if I try to extract an unfired cartridge?

.303 is usually .312 diameter . So you will probably need to expand the 308 case necks and that will make the final neck diameter larger than a normal 308 round . Hard to say if it will jam in the neck area of the chamber or not , chambers vary . Why not just size the 303 bullets down to .308 and re-coat them .

As JohnV said, it may jam in the throat before even contacting the bore. you would be advised to size an empty case and try to insert it in the chamber prior to loading up and having a stuck live round situation. Coatings do not induce "slipperiness' any more than Cu/Ni jackets do so you will have pressure increases, how to determine a starting load in that situation is moot but I would start below minimums and check every shot has cleared the barrel. Again, as JohnV said, better to re-size, coming down .004" is unlikely to even remove the coating on HRBC bullets.

They'll be fine in a .308" bore. Berry's Copper-Plated .312" shoot very well in my .30-06. No, a PC bullet won't get stuck in the throat, unless perhaps it's a bore-rider design with a nose that is fatter than .300".

As above, you need to try and stick a cast boolit into the case mount of brass fired in your gun. If it fits, try around 10 gr of TB with the 312 boolits.

As for 2206 H, I am not sure if you can get it slow enough to work. Even if you do, you will do gas checks. Beyond 1400, or some say 1600 ft/S with extremely hard lead alloy and heavy coating, you will need gas checks, period. Cheapest way is to get a Lee sizing die in 308 (strongly recommend you hone it to 309), it will size and seat the gas check at the same time. Personally I will use 2207, it's fast burning enough to keep the velocity below 2000pfs (even with gas check it gets difficult to get a good group beyond that point, not too mention excessive leading.
